GSXR tach to Gs wiring question.....

Hello guys, I have a question in regards to wiring this tach on my scoot.....I picked up a decent set of gixxer gauges, and got everything wired and working perfect (All the dummy lights etc).......The only thing left is the actual wires (3) from the tach......

From GIXXER TACH

1) black with red tracer
2) Black/ orange
3) black/white

I just dont want to screw anything up or toast anything......Im a little fuzzy on where these wires are to connect on my 1980 GS750, I know I have to get a signal off the coil, just not sure where to tap everything in. From what Im reading on here, Its better to have its own ground as well correct?

Again I appreciate all input and help.........I will post some pics when all is said and done............Catch ya later, Eric

Here's a guess
B/W ground
B/R hot wire
B/O to the igniter wire that goes to one of the coils

if you go to Gixxer.com there are free manual downloads for oilers; you can check the schematics to figure it out.

Thanks POS for the heads up......and Chef your right, its better than guessing.....

Im downloading the wiring diagram as we speak.......But my next question is once I figure out what is what on the GSXR tach, I have to figure out what is what on the GS750 , so I can mate it up.....

Im thinking I have to skim over to Bikecliffs site and dig up some wiring diagrams ? So I can see what to tap into on my bike to make the tach work.........

Why cant I just wave a magic wand over this rig and "Poof" its done LOL:cool:

I crossed a red gixxer wire with a yellow gs wire one time and..... yep here it comes.....

 LOL.......Yeah Im gonna figure this out before something goes wrong.................Note to self: (dont cross a red gixxer wire with a yellow gs wire)

Which wiring diagram would one go by for an 1980 GS750L?

I'm going to go out on a limb and say you should use the diagram marked as being for a U.S. 1980 GS750L? :-)
If you can't find that, then use a similar time-period 750/850/1000.

Going from memory, on the GS wiring you're going to want:
orange-with-white-tracer (+ ignition circuit)
black-with-yellow-tracer (coil signal, a switched ground)
black or black-with-white-tracer (ground)

I think it's _likely_ that the B/Y GS wire goes to the B/R GSXR wire and the O/W GS wire goes to B/O, and of course B/W to B/W, but I may be wrong. As I recall those tachs are fed a signal directly from the ignitor, not from the coil, but I don't know if that changes anything.

Richard,
I think your spot on......I wired it up as you have said, with the exception of the orange and white tracer wire. I just taped into the extra brown wire in the headlight bucket.....

Crossed my fingers and gave it a go, and all was good. The rpms seemed to be accurate...All the dummy lights work etc....

Looks pretty nice actually......Im waiting for the Cafe fairing to come in to hide the ugliness in the back of the gixxer gauges LOL ....

Only problem Im having now is the speedo isnt working.Im assuming it would have been off a bit, but its not working at all. I know the cable is good, as the stock speedo works flawless. So I have the assumption there is something funky going on in the gauge maybe???

FYI,
I know this doesn't help the wiring or speedo problem but my solution to the ugly back of guages problem on by 86 Gixxer 1100 with 91 Gixxer 1100 guages is a Ducatti headlamp fairing to fit the 8"train light from an ED,

You just wanted to show off that sweet Train light:D.......I have a fairing ordered should be here in a day or two......I guess Im gonna attack my 530 conversion in the meantime........

Im thinking if the speedo cable spins with the front tire, it should spin the gixxer speedo right? ( I understand the spped should be off).....So if its not spinning its gonna be a problem in the gixxer speedo more then likely???

Chef, you were so close LOL:cool:

Well that also :D; actually I was considering making a small guage housing out of fiberglass before I chucked the idea and just did the fairing.
You should be able to spin the input of the speedo with an electric drill and see that the needle will move.

What gages are you using?

What gages are you using?

Well they were listed as 97 gsxr 750 gauges, but I believe they are more like 94-95 gauges maybe earlier.......

I will check out the drill rig as well........One cool note.....Note sure if this was smart or not, but the gixxer gauges had the oil temp gauge, so I wired my gas tank sending unit to that gauge, funny thing is the tank is half full and it registers in the middle of the temp gauge LOL, if I lean the bike the needle drops as it should etc......

So Im going to change the Hot (H) and Cold (C) on the gauge to F + E, and going to paint out the word temp and repaint fuel ( actuall black out and use small vinyl decals) Should look good:-\\\

Here is a pic of the gauges.....Not to bad for an ebay buy of $35 LOL

OK I see what you are dealing with. Notice that tach goes a bit above redline for your GS. The 1100's have a lower range. I have a spare set of guages (might be 1100) I bought for cheap to use the water temp and convert to oil temp for the GSXR with 90-91 guages (it only has a 180 speedo and teh tach matchs the motor redline). :o

If you open up your fuel guage you will see some resistors on the periphery that could be swapped out. In the manual you will see that all the early GS fuel guages, temp sensors and later GSXR water sensors use the same sensor topology for guages.

I have not derived the circuit equations yet, but I think that you can probably change out the resistor values to get the sensor you already have to scale the guage properly.

basically sensors have a scaling, and the guages are scaled to match.
