Waiting for the banks to open, gonna buy this survivor for a restoration project.
First year 1987 CBR600F
Looked it over, runs ok, lights work, needs total cleanup, tires, chain and sprockets, battery and OEM mirrors.
Gonna take off all the stickers, repaint it red and black to match original bikes.

You will have such a great time on that bike. When they came out, I was riding an '87 Ninja 600. They weren't much faster, at least in acceleration, but they handled better, stopped better, and were more comfortable. Plus, they looked amazing.

Ok, looks like there's 2 choices of graphic designs for the 1st generation CBR600F.
Here's what I wanna finish with:

That's a lot of sanding coming up..haha. I always really liked the Hurricane. At the time they seemed so futuristic and swoopy..and to this day, still do. Looks like a very cool project. Congrats.

Bill, good luck. They look like fun bikes, but no personal experience.

A nearby neighbor has one he is holding on to. I've never seen it run. From what I saw it looks good (externally) and is stock down to the original exhaust. Last I saw, it was in the corner of the garage with a kids bicycles leaning on it.... His will be an extensive job if /when he ever gets to it due to long term sitting. He's not a mechanical type.

Right! That's why I'm gonna follow your painting project. I know what I have to do, but need some inspiration to raise my work level.
Thanks!

I know an old guy nearby who's got a Turbo GPz750, will sell $7000. mint condition.

Here's my beater Hurricane, still on the trailer. Looks like it needs everything.
From the scratches, I'm thinking it was originally white.

Made a bit of money off those back in the day. Found the right combination of headwork and cam lobe centers to really make them howl.
Got a customer race engine apart now waiting for parts.
They last quite well except for the gearbox. One gear has engagement dogs on the outside of a selector fork groove. With time and abuse a piece breaks out of the outer ring of the groove. Symptoms are selection problems.
The early ones came with the bearing cleatances too tight. Anything that's survived as a runner is probably OK.

Edit - The last two heads I had here the inlet valves were past using. The OE inlets are soft and indent badly. I'm told that OE inlet valves are pretty scarce so if needed, I'd go aftermarket stainless. The Exhaust valves are good and last well.

Thanks for the info! I'll PM you when I need some tips on the engine.

Ok, the rear tire is maybe the oldest tire I've seen on an old bike; DOT 156, so that's 3rd week of April 1996, a 23 year old tire.
Kinda says nobody's ridden it much in 15 years.
The front tire is 5 YO, but it has no sign of wear, hardly scuffed in.
All the old bikes I've bought had old tires, usually in the 10 to 15 YO range.

The colours are interesting. Never saw a red one here. They must have all gone to the US, LOL. One of the schemes we got was this magenta, black and green.
This is a customer bike from probably '87-'88. Most of them sold here were white. This bike still exists. One owner, good history, he's got it tucked away.

Have you had the fairings off yet ? The last three I've had here, the engines exteriors were disgusting. Under the fairings, they don't get cleaned.
The one here at present, I've had to have vapour blasted. It looked like it had been at the bottom of the sea for at least a year...
If anyone's interested I can pull the cases out and take a pic later - but I don't want to give you "case envy" LOL.

Good looking bike, that's an F2, or it has the F2 wheels.
BTW, will the F2 wheels fit the F1 Hurricane?

It's an F1 - but he finished up with extra wheels, as you do with race bikes...they may not even be F2 wheels. So long ago mow I can't remember - if I was ever told anyway. There were a lot of grey import Japanese home market 250's and 400's coming in around that time. They could be off anything. The criteria would be if they were wider than OE. Which were decidedly skinny.

I considered buying one of those bikes brand new back in the day. Can't remember if it was an F1 or F2 though. Anyway, what I do remember is that the bike cost something like $4 or $4.5k and insurance was $2k. Apparently they figured the bike was going to get totaled within 2 years. I passed.

Comprehensive insurance was (is) so expensive because if it tips off the side stand in the drive way, it could cost thousands of dollars in damage.

Then there's that whole young, unmarried male on a massively powerful sport bike thing.

I think those are the two main reasons.
