Day 1
We left at 10 am instead of the planned 6am.
We slept in after a few beers the night before, plus the time it took to console my friends soon to be wife and assure her that no one was going to die, and that we would return home.
We caught the edge of a storm when we pulled into Edmonton, but after half an hour and a greasy burger at McDonald's the clouds passed and away we went.
On our way through Edmonton we passed the edge of the Edmonton Indy and got to hear the indy cars power shifting and revving up. Made my bike sound like a Honda 50!
Our next stop was some small road side gas station, and between that station and Niton, while we traveled along the south side of a lake, we had two lanes of highway in one direction, all to ourselves for 50 or kilometers. It was pretty awesome.
We arrived at Hornbeck Provincial Campground in Edson Alberta after 563kms.
That's our day so far.
Here's the pictures so far.
Since today was mostly riding, and not really any sight seeing, there isn't many.
This is our bikes this morning right before we left.
Packed up good and heavy!!
You can see my buddy Pony Boy in the picture, and his worried bride too.
The duffel bag on top of the Budweiser bag is a 12 volt powered cooler.
I wired a 12v power plug socket into my bike with a switch and a fuse.
The switch is the same one used as exterior switches on transport trucks, so It should be tough enough to survive me.
My spedo before we left. I will post another when we pull back in the driveway.
This was an A&W along the way, in Niton I think. I haven't seen a retro style one in years, so I took a picture. Also, two Papa burgers for $7.
This is just after we pulled into Edson, we stopped to try to figure out where the beer store and campground were, and I looked in my rearview and saw this.
The highway actually turns into the main street and then back into the highway.
We found the beer store! Good news is that the cooler bag will hold an entire 15 pack of cans.
And we found the campground.
The campground was 16kms past Edson, and we missed the firewood truck by 5 minutes so I ran back into Edson to get some from the gas station.
I went in and paid for the smallish load of wood and then rode my bike over to the far island to get my wood from the bin.
I had a burning smoke in my mouth when I pulled up to the wood bin, and a guy pumping gas across the island from me asked me as I dismounted if I would be so kind to put my smoke out while he pumped his fuel.
I said Sure, of course and flicked my smoke a good distance away.
He smiled as if to say thanks, until I pulled my 10 inch knife from it's sheath on my belt and stabbed it into the upper most chunk of fire wood, and dragged it back towards me to split the wrapping holding all the wood together.
He looked nervous for a second and then said "I'm glad your a nice guy".
LOL.
I didn't mean to make him nervous, but I did find it funny since I'm huge and scarred and tattooed.
Tank and Pony were here. 2012.
