Day 1

We left at 10 am instead of the planned 6am.
We slept in after a few beers the night before, plus the time it took to console my friends soon to be wife and assure her that no one was going to die, and that we would return home.
We caught the edge of a storm when we pulled into Edmonton, but after half an hour and a greasy burger at McDonald's the clouds passed and away we went.
On our way through Edmonton we passed the edge of the Edmonton Indy and got to hear the indy cars power shifting and revving up. Made my bike sound like a Honda 50!
Our next stop was some small road side gas station, and between that station and Niton, while we traveled along the south side of a lake, we had two lanes of highway in one direction, all to ourselves for 50 or kilometers. It was pretty awesome.
We arrived at Hornbeck Provincial Campground in Edson Alberta after 563kms.
That's our day so far.
Here's the pictures so far.
Since today was mostly riding, and not really any sight seeing, there isn't many.

This is our bikes this morning right before we left.
Packed up good and heavy!!
You can see my buddy Pony Boy in the picture, and his worried bride too.
The duffel bag on top of the Budweiser bag is a 12 volt powered cooler.
I wired a 12v power plug socket into my bike with a switch and a fuse.
The switch is the same one used as exterior switches on transport trucks, so It should be tough enough to survive me.

My spedo before we left. I will post another when we pull back in the driveway.

This was an A&W along the way, in Niton I think. I haven't seen a retro style one in years, so I took a picture. Also, two Papa burgers for $7.

This is just after we pulled into Edson, we stopped to try to figure out where the beer store and campground were, and I looked in my rearview and saw this.
The highway actually turns into the main street and then back into the highway.

picture.php

We found the beer store! Good news is that the cooler bag will hold an entire 15 pack of cans.

picture.php

And we found the campground.

The campground was 16kms past Edson, and we missed the firewood truck by 5 minutes so I ran back into Edson to get some from the gas station.
I went in and paid for the smallish load of wood and then rode my bike over to the far island to get my wood from the bin.
I had a burning smoke in my mouth when I pulled up to the wood bin, and a guy pumping gas across the island from me asked me as I dismounted if I would be so kind to put my smoke out while he pumped his fuel.
I said Sure, of course and flicked my smoke a good distance away.
He smiled as if to say thanks, until I pulled my 10 inch knife from it's sheath on my belt and stabbed it into the upper most chunk of fire wood, and dragged it back towards me to split the wrapping holding all the wood together.
He looked nervous for a second and then said "I'm glad your a nice guy".
LOL.
I didn't mean to make him nervous, but I did find it funny since I'm huge and scarred and tattooed.

Got lots of photos but the icy rain from Sask River X-ing to lake louise was insane.
It took us an hour and half a dozen cups of coffee to warm back up.
When we got to the exit for LL I went to hit the signal switch but I couldn't feel it with my thumb, and didn't have enough power to push it, ended up using my palm to switch it. The weather was freezing cold in LL and it was supposed to snow, so we kept moving on to Banff and camped at tunnel mountain.

I will post pics and get caught up on posts when we get to Fernie, should be tonight or tomorrow morning.

It sounds like you were a little bit past your physical limits. :(
Hope that the rest of the trip is not as excruciating.
Looking forward to those pic's.

As you rode past Mt Temple (if you could see it), did you consider the Climbers up there, during "Prime Climbing Season", actually using their Hands to make progress, while the Ice plasters to the side of their faces?
That's why most just roll their windows down, toss their cigarette butts out, take a picture and Drive to the next "Lookout".
Tourists,,..
Did ya know its OK to wear Gloves in cold weather?
This Radar tells you whats goin on in Southern Alberta

Just a quick update!
Rained at night in Banff while we were sleeping but we had the tent tarped and we stayed dry. Left for Fernie with a stop by Lussier springs and loved it so much we camped at whiteswan lake. I got that tip from a member here but HOLY SHEET what a road!!!!
Pics and full details to come, but the trip since then has more than made up for the wet and frozen icefields run.

Too bad about the cold weather up in the parks, just be glad you weren't down in the Cranbrook/Fernie area then. We had major wind storms, trees down, tons of rain and some areas had power out from Friday evening until Tuesday. Most had it back within 24/36 hours but some areas didn't. I figured you guys would like the hotsprings. Sounds like good adventures so far and hopefully a soft bed awaits you in Fernie. ENJOY!!!

Look on the bright side,,.. at least your Beer was Cold,,..

It's been almost 2 weeks since his last update. I hope all is well.

This is one trip you may need to pack a gun, because of brown bears.

Very nice country!

A gun? In Canada? The first thing customs asks me when I cross the border is do I have a gun. I never do but they still have searched me a few times.:|

So the other thread inquiring about Tank disappeared... anyone have any idea what's happened?

i could have checked in if i was home, or if my laptop worked right.
i didnt know this many ppl were concerned though.
i seriously need to figure out something better than this onscreen keyboard .
sorry to worry you all.
the road on a GS was like crack.
the very first taste felt good. It felt too good.
It felt SO good infact that i sunk every minute and every dollar i had into keeping that feeling as long as i could.
GS still runs great every day, no issues.
it'll do another 5000kms without breaking a sweat.
