    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

So, after my latest purchase of another GS450S, I decided that it is time to let the '84 GS1100GK go. I got it out of storage and brought it home to get wake it up again. It took next to nothing to get it going again (it is the most reliable bike that I've ever owned) but I was having trouble with rear brake not releasing. The rear brake has always been a bit wonky. I took it apart 3 times, cleaned, reassembled, etc....but the it still was still difficult to roll around and it seemed that stupid brake still would not operate properly.
Last night after taking it apart once again, I sat down for a minute to think about it. What could it be ?? I am well versed in the braking system and was confident that I did everything correctly. What could it be ?? Then I had this thought....what if it wasn't the rear brake at all....
Yep. The brakes are locked up and the FRONT wheel would not rotate at all without great force. So , I removed the front calipers and will work on them over the weekend.

Did I mention that I'm an idiot ???
 
Funny story! Time for you to take a refresher course in N, S, E & W, up and down, and, of course, front and back. ;)
 
Just think Larry, none of us have ever done anything like that before, you're the only one. Be glad you figured it out before someone else did.

Ha !! I've always heard that...Experience is something you learn immediately after you need it.
By the way, the rear brakes work great now. Also, if any of you are interested in a pretty nice GK, it will be for sale soon.
 
When I sold my original ('73) Z1 some years ago, except for the tank, the bike was rusting in the backyard for a decade. Front brake was locked, and buyer asked if I had a hammer. I had a hammer. :rolleyes:
 
Life story. But I had ridden it for a full decade. And the beautiful, original paint tank was safe and warm inside the house.
 
Huh. Okay. I've never had a motorcycle that didn't get ridden regularly (okay, with the exception of my brother's CB900f, which is in the process of an astoundingly slow restoration).
 
Ugh, the hammer trick. When I bought a parts bike a few years ago I made the mistake of squeezing the front brake, which then refused to release. The seller did the hammer trick. It worked, but knocked the bobbins on the rotors loose.
 
Just a quick update. I got the front calipers released, rebuilt and operating normally. I took The Mighty GK out for a little unregistered and unlicensed 10 mile spin yesterday to get some gas in it and generally have a blast !!
It runs and rides great as I remember. It is also For Sale !!! Check out the For Sale listing here in the For Sale forum.
