A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Is the seat for the 1000 the same as for 750 or 850?

It's been a long time since I've been here. Noticed a few problems with the site in recent days when I tried to log-on. What was up with that?

The restoration of my 1978 1k is well under way, the bike is literally in pieces and on shelves. The frame and the swingarm are going into the paintshop tomorrow to be repainted, but I want to get a head start on the seat, so it'll be ready when it's needed.

Anyway, at my local bike shop they've got seat covers for only a GS 750 and GS 850, not for a 1k.

My question is: is the 1k's seat of the same dimensions as of these two smaller bikes?

Oh, if anyone's interested, I'm posting a pic of how the bike looked 2 days ago (no work done yesterday or today except to clean the frame and swingarm with steam under pressure and then to remove the paint) before we took it completely apart, it took two days to completely demolecularize it.

Thanks in advance!

The 78 1000 is quite specific, I forced a later model cover to fit but ripped it in the process. A 78 750 *may* be the same. The 80 - 82 850 & 1000 are definitely different. Make sure you get the right one!

I bought a travelcade seat cover for an 80 gs850g but put it on my 79 gs1000E, and it fit perfectly. The seat pans are similar sizes but the hinges are different and the latch tower is different. I think this is because the 850 seat rides lower so they don't need the frame rail covers on the seat. Travelcade will make a cover for your exact model, so I would have to recommend that (your results may vary).

noobie,
The 750 seat is way short....the 850/1000 pans are similar...one model has a plastic part attached that runs alongbottom of seat. mounts up same but has posts to mount plastic part...850 doesn't have that...
So 850/1000 can be interchanged....but if it has the trin along bottom it might have to be removed...I have one of these and built it up to fit on my GS850.....less trim......

Thank you for all your replies!

I'm getting just the seat cover (the leather part), not the whole seat, cause the current one is god awful. My father gave it to someone to make the seat, but that moron sewed it through and didn't have the leather stretch and be taut. So, not only is it horrible concerning the comfort, but also if I'm caught by the rain (which has happened many times with my other bikes) then the rain will go through the needle and thread holes and soak the sponge part of the seat, which will then start rotting... I'll be posting a pic tomorrow, just have to take a photo of it.

I live in Europe and the only shop with bike parts is the chain Louis (www.louis.de) and they have the seat covers for the 750 and 850.

Anyway, mine is a May 1978 GS 1000 E, so I guess the better question should be... are the seat covers, not the seats, interchangeable.

Rodm850g answered the question, but I need someone to confirm it with 100% certainty cause the seat covers at Louis are not exactly cheap and I'd hate to throw away the money.

Does anyone have both a 850 and a 1000 and can they please just measure the length, width and height of the seats for me? I'd be infinitely grateful.

The thing is my GS seems to be the only one in my small country so there's no way I'd be able to sell the cover to someone else. Grrr.

Sometimes it's nice to have something special and rare, but when you need replacement parts it's hell. I have to order everything from Germany, such as the exhaust system that's rusted through.

Thank you all!

they're UK based (obviously) but postage to Europe shouldn't be a killer. I've always had excellent service from them - they know what they're talking about and are very helpful. The last seat cover I bought off them, for a 1000, was good quality and cost around ?25 (which makes it cheap over here).

They do a decent pattern exhaust as well. As the ? is doing poorly against the Euro you could get a good deal (plus they are set up for Paypal which means you won't have to finance your bank manager's holiday if you did an electronic bank transfer).

Thank you very much for the link, hampshirehog!
