A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I am trying to get the stator cover off and (no surprise) haven't been having much luck with my philips bits. I haven't been able to find any JIS screwdrivers locally, but I have seen the links provided by others on this site.

Can anyone tell me what size the case screw heads are? There are a couple of kits on the http://www.rjrcooltools.com/shop_item_detail.cfm?subcat_ID=138 site and I don't want to spend the cash to order them in only to find out they are not the right size. On that site, they have a 'motorcycle' kit with a #1, #2, and #3 screwdrivers, or a 5 piece kit that goes from #00 to #2.

If someone can help me ensure I won't be wasting my time and money waiting for the wrong kit, I would appreciate it.

Chris

You need an impact driver. Sears Craftsman makes a good one. A #3 bit fits well into the screws. Use a nice heavy hammer too.

Looking at mine I would guess #2 for cover screws, maybe #3. Definitely nothing smaller.

Nessim, Thanks for the suggestion. I have a smaller impact driver from HF that wasn't doing the job. I'll consider an upgrade.

Joe, Thanks for the extra set of eyes. I thought they looked awfully large, so if I place and order I'll probably go with the 1,2,3 set.

That HF impact will do fine but you'll want the better bits from Sears. I have the same one and that is what I did the day after I bought it and chewed up the tips on the first three screws.

Actually the small one from HF won't do much except on tiny screws. The normal size one works OK with better tips.

Autozone had a decent one for $9.99. I bought one and it's proven to be invaluable. Just used it on my stator cover and made pretty easy work of it.

I could hear it taunting me from my living room...

So, I bought the one at Sears and a 4lb dead blow from HF. It is ridiculous how well that worked. I had the bigger HF driver a couple of years ago, and it didn't work for me nearly as well as the one I got tonight, if that's helpful to anyone who might stumble across this in a search...

Thanks, everyone for the input!

Once you get those phillip screws out, replace all your fasteners with SS socket (allen head) fasteners. Z1 Enterprises has fastener kits for most GSs.
