So, I finally had some time today to try to work on my carbs (I have been trying to make time for quite a while now), so I do what I need to do and all of a sudden I notice a problem with the bottom-side of my carbs ... there seems to be something missing in the area where my floats should be mounted.

Can anyone help me identify the issue from the picture :-\\\

Here ... maybe I can help you a bit ...

There seems to be a missing section from the pivot for the floats!!!

Has anyone rebuilt those posts or would I be better to locate a new bank of carbs for my bike? I think I now fully understand why my floats didn't seem to work properly.

To me, it looks like they snapped off (possible due to one of the previous owners). I think that they may have been like that for a while as I could not find any of the missing pieces. Someone might have tried to do some carb-work and when punching out the pin, punched too hard.

if you don't have the missing parts not much you can do, if you do, you can try and use some JB-Weld to reattach the posts ? or find another set of carbs, either a whole bank, or just the 2 that seem to have issues..

My current plan is to visit one of the local motorcycle recyclers tomorrow after work (local's will know of TJ's Cycle) to see if they have anything that will be able to help me out.

I did a quick search on eBay and found a bank-of-four on there, but, from a '79 - they look totally different so I don't think I should even try.

Someone else took apart a bank of carbs and is selling the pieces individually, so, if I have no luck locally, I might consider that route.

:( I think I want to cry in my beer tonight :(

Ones from 79 won't work on yours, although you might do a search on here, it maybe poss. with some mods.? terrylee

1979 850s had VM carbs, and those won't fit the head on your bike. You have CV carbs. The specs for yours are:
GS850 Carb Specs:
Measurements = mm (in.)
Carburetor type = Mikuni BS32SS
Bore Size = 32 (1.26)
I.D. No. = 45110
Idle rpm = 1050 +/- 100rpm
Fuel Level = 5.0 +/- 0.5 (0.20 +/- 0.02)
Float Height = 22.4 +/- 1.0 (0.88 +/- 0.04)
Main Jet = #115
Main Air Jet = 1.7
Jet Needle = 5D50
Needle Jet = X-5
Pilot Jet = #40
Bypass = 1.0, 0.8, 0.8
Pilot Outlet = 0.7
Valve Seat = 2.0
Starter Jet = #32.5
Pilot Screw = Preset (actually, these can be adjusted - start with about 2 turns out from lightly seated)
Throttle cable play = 0.5-1.0 (0.02-0.04)

Do some hunting for "BS32SS carbs" on eBay. These are used on several models, so you should be able to find a rack to cannibalize for new bodies with good posts.

Also, look in "Parts for Sale" and post in "Parts Wanted" here

Lots of members have spare carb parts

Judging by the ham handed approach on the carbs, I'd be looking very closely at everything on the bike while you wait for the carbs to arrive

I stopped in at TJ's Cycle and looked through their CarbShack (building with about a thousand carbs in various conditions stacked up on shelving) and found about 45 carb-sets to pick from and two GS bikes in the row with the carbs still attached ready for me to take-off. One of the GS bikes was a smaller and the other was a bigger one than mine.

Anyway, I picked one that looked like everything was there, the top and bottom caps were still in place, but, I did notice that butterfly's would not moved easily, but, all the rest of the GS-based carbs there were in the same kind of condition.

Are there any hints I should do with these carbs before I damage them taking them apart? Should I spray everything down first with WD-40 (or similar penetrating oil) and allow it to sit, or, would it be better to just drop it whole into a container of carb-dip to see what happens?

First off, WD-40 is not a penetrating oil but a water displacement "dryer" for lack of a better word. Use something like PB Blaster if you are trying to free up stuff. Honestly, a good dip of each carb separately should help some of what you are seeing.

Secondly, are you certain those carbs will fit your bike (spacing, port sizes, etc)? Post up a picture here and the real experts (I'm not one of them) can help answer your questions better than me.

As requested, here is a picture of the carbs - they look like they are in basically good condition - a little bit of weathering on the caps (I have some pretty chrome ones already that I will use) and like I said, the butterflys don't wanna move easily.

If I have any time tonight after helping a friend with their KLR650 modifications, the carb's will get soaked with PB-Blaster as suggested. I haven't done much for carb-work, so, I am going to rely on you guys-n-gals and what I watched about the carbs on YouTube videos ... and then pray I do a good job of it.

Carb rebuild tutorial is linked in my signature.

Those "new" carbs look pretty corroded. I'd compare the condition to your existing carbs and piece together the best parts from both to make one set.

Be sure to look close at the various carb jet sizes and compare to the specs in the factory Suzuki service manual. Assuming your bike is stock you want stock jet numbers where ever possible.

Good luck

Might I suggest this link as well

it will give you instructions on how to post pictures on the site here, larger ones at that, and a good setting for pics for sites is about 800X600, make that setting on PB and in your account settings.

I have your tutorial already saved in my documents folder and I have another two GS documents saved as well. I have read over all of them several times over now, so, I have the basic theory down, the theory just needs a little practicle knowledge applied to it.

As far as the rusting and such goes, I was planning to use my buffing wheels to polish it all up till it glows like fresh chrome.

Might I suggest this link as well

I am just working within the limitations put on us here on the forum by the administration. I run a few vBulletin forums as well (and planning on building up another one here shortly), so, I know how to do things like that. If you like, I can send you a PM with a link to the forums - none of which are motorcycle based, but, there is always motorcycle talk going on.

The one thing that I try to encourage the members of my sites to do is to have my systems host the graphic-files instead of an outside source. The outside source (like PhotoBucket and others) can easily have broken links, especially if you forget about that account and it closes down - then the forum will no longer be able to show the pictures and then the member will need to relocate the files and re-upload them to make them visible again. Sometimes the member will have lost the original pictures (computer crash), so, the details required for that particular posting are no longer valid.

I hear ya....I run and ran a few sites as well, this one is the way it is, I agree on hosting the content as well, but it take disk space, cpu power and so on, and that can get costly...as you know.

you probably noticed the first time you logged in all the posts were the wrong way, a setting that could be changed, has been mentioned but still has not been applied to have it go the other way...

it's just the way it is....and has been for a long time, I don't think the owner is completely site literate, but still does a fine job in keeping the place going.....

I just don't like the little pics, and hate when it takes me either to another site to see the bigger pic, or opens the thumb nail and then I have to click off to get back to what I was reading...just my pet peeve, I guess...

but it's all good, great site either way, lots of info, and that is the main thing...

hit the caps with your buffing wheel and they can come out looking like this...

I saw that posting before, looked at my original caps on my bike and realized that they were already very pretty. I'll probably polish everything - the insides of the carbs for cleaner flow (or should I get my buddy to machine them with circulating-grooves to swirl the air) and clean up all the rusty parts and such.

I wouldn't play with the internals, well at least I wouldn't, just clean them up on the inside get rid of any crap, and leave them as the factory made them, you start changing too much you could run into issues....

start with a soaking in your favorite cleaning solution, berryman's, PineSol and so on, for at least 48 hours, a bit of scrubbing on the outside, and see what your left with...

do remove the diaphragms before the soak, all else can stay on the carbs, and for a real good clean, they should be stripped down completely and soaked, or taken apart after and cleaned fully

I was reading in one of my magazines that Mikuni has built a new website for everything Mikuni-related that they call MikuniPower.com - so - with great interest I pop into the site to see what is all there. For some reason, my skills with the computer are lacking, but, I cannot find any specific information about my '81 carb for my bike on the site.

So, I loaded up another Mikuni site (Mikuni.com) and looked through that site and didn't find anything listing the BS-carb either ... just a bunch of Harley information.

I was hoping to be able to locate a "full-rebuild" kit on their site for my carbs even though I bought something on eBay. I am reaching the end of my patience with my second set of carbs for my bike ... I still cannot get the butterflys to move, I stripped the heads off of several screws (good thing I have a full set of extras), it took me a couple weeks of cleaning just to get the slides out, found a whack-load of rust in the float-bowls and then I purchased a parts-cleaner that I filled with Kerosene and put the carbs into the flow.

It seems to be doing "better" but even after all the money I spent on trying to get these carbs to work, I am still sitting with a bike in the garage waiting to be ridden ....

With two racks of carbs you should not need any extra parts, you have plenty. You should get Robert Barr's Carb 0-ring set (and intake rings while your at it) and that should be all you need. Not sure why its taking so long. Make sure the diaphrams are not part of your kerosene bath. Can anyone in Alberta drop over and help this guy? Seems like we are missing something here
