Matching factory colors on 1983 GS1100E

I am seriously thinking of repainting my 1100 back to factory color. My question is, can I match the original factory color (its red but I really like the blue), and if so which company makes the right color? Being fund-deficient I don't think I can afford a professional paint job so have been thinking of a do-it-yourself project. Yes I get the old adage that successful painting is 95% prep and 5% painting. Also, are the original tank and side cover decals still available from Suzuki (doubtful) or is Ebay the way to go. Thanks.

If the decals are available i was told years ago by my suzi spares guy (guru) there not worth it as they be all "dried" up. Can get non genuine ones that look factory

Pretty sure originals are still available. For reference, here is my '82, which was painted shortly before I bought her in 2013 to look like an '83:

You might ask Posplayr about the red paint if you decide to go that route, as he recently painted some sidecovers for me (not pictured). And the red adds about 5 HP. :xsmilie_mrgreen: (My tank badges are not OEM spec.)

Is this true?

Wait, you mean all these years I was missing an extra 5HP because my favorite color is blue? Dang...

Well, that's how I want mine to look. The pictures of the paint cans, is what I see the amount I need to paint the whole bike? I assume so, as it looks right. Should I take the number off the front of the paint can and use that to match it down here in Oregon? Thanks for the link to the decals also, that solves another question I had. Lastly, I notice on yours there are chrome covers on the side of the airbox. Mine does not have those, and I see no place to mount those covers. Do you know if those are only for Canadian models? Thanks for all your help.

Yes that's the amount of paint to get..I still have some left over..which is always good.

As for the paint numbers, yes use those numbers, it should be easy as I got the paint in Phoenix AZ....$135 for paint. I think I spent around $250 for all the materials.

As for the airbox covers...the bike came with them...someone put them on at some point. They are the same as what's on a 80-81 gs1100...I liked them so I kept them on.

And be sure to look through my paint thread I posted at the bottom of my last post. My dad painted it...well you will see. :)

Good luck...I think you will be very happy with the colour...in the thread you will see a pic where I compared an old side cover (bought new covers because of broken tabs) to a newly painted one and as you can see the colours are pretty dead on.
Make sure you keep us posted...

Thanks for the link to the paint thread. At some point I will probably get tired of patina.... And yours looked a lot better to start with.

Trevor, your dad is an amazing painter, shows what one can do with skill rather than a shiny shop with shiny tools. Great job. I am going to get the paint as soon as I can, will post pictures of course during the process. The chrome covers look good but I think I'll keep her stock. Nice to know it can be done.
Below is a picture of the bike when I got it. I have done some temp work to make her legal and safe; CB500 bars, replacement mirrors, front fender, GS850 gauges, aftermarket headlight and aftermarket turn signals, these will all be replaced with stock parts in the next few weeks. Had to get rid of the clip-ons, bar end mirrors and ugly tail-light. Still have mechanical work to do but nothing serious.

PS, how does one post larger pictures? I am unable to figure that one out. Thanks.

Red are faster when they're upside down and blue are faster with the wheels on the ground. New Yorkers never tell the whole story:wink: Diablo is a good outfit to deal with!

Download your photos to a hosting site such as Photobucket. Once you have the picture there, copy the picture's IMG code and paste it on a thread post.

Thanks Charlie, I thought I could just use what I had saved as a picture on my laptop but now I know better. Also thanks for showing me how it looks in large size, I must say she is uglier than I wanted to admit but soon she will be much improved.

Thanks, I will tell my dad that..:) Looks like you have a pretty good canvas to work with...

I'm in my garage right now looking at my freshly painted (Blue) and new decal bike right now. Decals are around $40 US... http://www.diablocycle.com/GS1100E-1983-Blue-Complete-Decal-Set.html

I could not find the original "Stary blue" paint...from what I have been told does not exist.....

The paint...

Clear...

The result..

Here is my paint thread...

Those numbers on the paint can are not a mixing code. I was told they are a paint chip code.. and as such, any supply shop would either have to sell that brand or know what paint chip database that it refers too. I'm just coming up against brick walls trying to get this resolved. I guess my next step would be to find a dealer of that R-M line of paint and contact. them with that code number and see if they can help me. This paint must have been picked from a book of sample paint colors. Along with this code it must have had a color name to go with it. And the quest continues....

Do you have a sample part in the color you like? If so, most any auto paint supplier can scan the color, and then fine tune the formula for a good match. It's what they do.

My guy found a Chrysler blue that we thought was an exact match... Got the side covers painted and all was good... Later when it was parked in direct sunlight, I can see the paint is exact but the metallic is slightly different, the blue metallic has a slight purple tint.
