I have been wanting to upgrade the wheels on my 1980 GS1000E for a few years now but wanted to keep everything else stock wherever possible.

I want lighter wheels and from the factory "tubeless" rims.

I currently have a GS1100 aluminum swingarm on the bike.

I have read that a Bandit 600 wheel will bolt right up in the front and the rear will align with a GS500 twin sproket carrier. Not certain what years however...

Other than that, I am pretty unsure about the rest of the conversion.

For this setup will I need new disks and calipers? Will I need Salty Monk's mounting brackets? Spacers?

Just wondering if anybody has done this and can confirm before I start looking for parts.

Thanks in advance.

My GS1000 has late model wheels, and I will tell you now that the Bandit 6 front is not a direct bolt up. They are wider at the hub and you will not have clearance for the rotors. I ended up using the 600 Bandit front fork tubes with a GK triple tree. I also had to have a custom axle made. Then I was able to use the Bandit brakes and calipers plus had the 41mm fork tubes, as far as the rear you can stick the 600 Bandit wheel in very easily with your aluminum swing arm with a few spacer mods and some minor sprocket spacing.

Thanks for the information, your bike looks amazing...

Good to see the rear is compatible.

Do you remember what year wheels you are running?

I really want to keep the stock tubes if possible since I just got them set up with racetech cartridge emulators, progressive springs and a new Tarozzi brace.

I wonder if all years of Bandit front wheels are the same width? Maybe a GSXR front is narrower?

I'm about to fit an 83 1150 Wheel @3.5" & use it tubeless with an Avon Azuro ST Radial (140 size).

To go with it I have an 82 GS650/850g tubeless wheel @2.15" & there is a matching 110 Azuro in 19" that will fit (although the patterns of the wheel spokes are different & the 2.15 is borderline for a 110 Radial tyre...)

**** Update looks like they are not making this 19" front any more

You could use this setup with Avon Roadriders or the sport Pilot Bias & go tubeless. Then you could use the twinpot brakes & your existing forks....

Your other option could be an 1150 Rear with a GSXR 18" front wheel but you will be tight on space for the brakes - a bit of messing around required.

If you only want lighter & wider you could get a set of rims laced onto a set of GS1000 Hubs.. that would bolt right up. Won't be tubeless.

No wheel swap is completely bolt on... :)

One thought that crossed my mind... Maybe a V Strom Wheelset would be close to a bolt on or what about a GS500? You might have speedo drive issues...

Posplayer, nice bike! Damn...

Thank you Mr. Monk.

I had seen a few posts about the GS500 wheel scattered about the GSR. Might try to research that a bit more. I am not so much concerned with more tire width, just weight and from the factory tubeless.

Upgrading the brakes would be nice though, currently the stainless lines I added make a huge difference.

Maybe GS tubeless wheels would do the trick...

If you need more width at the hub but want to continue using your GS1000 forks you could look at using a set of 1983 GS750E/ES or 1150 triples. These are wider than Skunk triples by at least 3/4" from memory so would give you more room to fit rotors etc but could still use your fork legs.

You will likely have to mess with steerer stops, ignition mount & gauge mounts though.

I would suspect that GS500 still has a mechanical speedo drive so that would work out... Think the Vstroms is electric.

It's highly likely that you will need to use an offset front sprocket if you go up in wheel width (more than 150) at the back. Also don't forget about the brakes. I had to use a custom caliper hanger when I did the GSXR wheel on the GS750ES.

Even with the 1150 Rim and 150 Tyre you will need to modify the brake stay & swap to a thinner 530 chain.

Might see it here...
