    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I missed this thread. Boy it looks sharp. Your making me feel lazy. I haven't touched the bikes in a while. It's been below freezing for weeks and that isn't much of a motivator.

The tank came on the second 1000 I bought a few months ago, a great improvement on the tank that was there originally so I've just waxed it up and thrown it on. Not perfect but pretty good until I figure out how to paint. Have the compressor now just need guns and a whole lot of patience. I hear you about the cold Charlie. Once it gets below '0' I don't do much wrenching in the shed. Instead I pull the carbs in the basement, lol. Looking forward to spring though.

Yeah looks great..Glad you took our advise and decided to restore it to its glory and not bob it.
 
Hats off to you for all your hard work and know-how. Thanks for all the pics. I can't believe the shine on that engine! I've got to figure out how to do that. I'm sure the major ingredient is hours of elbow grease.

They both leak from the fuel line connection while turned to 'run'. I found the first one leaking when I came into the garage after an hour to smell the fuel and see gas pouring out of my carb overflow.....nice. Ya I saw your tip the bike technique on another posting about clutch rattle. When you say 'tip', I'm guessing at least a 45 degree angle? all apart and never checked it, arrr....like I said, not the sharpest tool in the shed but definitely the fastest.

I got the same problem with my petcocks, I had two that leaked in run, I fixed one, ironically it was the one with the old diaphram and bad mating surface, the one with the good O ring mating surface and new diaphram is the one I can't get to stop leaking hoping you have better luck.
Really nice bike, bet she runs as good as she looks.

Thanks, she's a blast to ride. I'm looking forward to this seasons trips. I finally got one of the original petcocks to work with the pile of spare parts I have kicking around.

I doubt I'll be doing any performance improvements to this one other than trying out the Marvin header on it to hear what it sounds like. I've got the other 1000 I may turn into more of a stock/mod bike.

I'll paint them black, hunt for a good set of calipers and make some stainless steel brake lines. Should do the trick. I've got some plans for the old girl this winter. I had so much fun with her touring this year and kicking up the dust with Charlie and the gang I think I want to make her go a little faster so I'm thinking stopping a little faster would be a good idea.
 
I would bead blast them first..then see how that looks and if I didnt like it..then paint the hubs.
 
measure the thickness BELOW the wear grooves on the leading edges as well....and in several places along the contact surfaces of the pads.

I have them discs/rotors on my 1000n wire wheels using yamaha fz6 calipers, they WORK. Nice bike by the way:D.
 
Well the old 78' 1000 took a back burner this last year as I pushed to get my 80' 1000G road worthy. Now with that bike done I can turn my attention back to the ol' girl.

She's not running well at all but she's back together so that's a start. Mikuni 29mm smoothbores, Marzocchi shocks, Tarozzi rearsets, K&N pods, Lockhart oil cooler with colour matching braided lines, Marving 4 into 1 racing exhaust, super bars, change over from spokes to mags and dual discs up front. The gas tank sprung a pin hole leak and she's running like crap but I'm happy. I'll get her running properly and then work on her over the winter. Saltymonk's brake upgrade, change out the front fender to something better looking, a better seat to go with the rearsets and the lower bars, and a set of magnesium rims that will take a 150 at the back. That should help me keep upright :D
