    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

How long do I have to soak new friction plates before they can be fitted?

What's best for use on the steels? Non stick (blue) pan scourer or the green ones that are a bit harsher?

When doing up the spring bolts, how tight? Presumably you keep doing them up until they stop & then just "snug them"

Scuff up the steel plates good - use the green. For the bolts, just tighten them like any bolt that size, you want a little stretch so they don't back out on their own.
 
maybe an hour soak time, overnight is a little long but just fine. Green 3M or red 3M scrubber pad work fine.

the clutch bolts are 90 inch pounds torque max
 
The clutch bolts really like to snap off, so unless you have a VERY expensive torque wrench that was calibrated by NASA just yesterday, pay attention to what your wrist is telling you as you snug them down. I use a t-handle and one hand only.

I just did this a few weeks ago on my 850. The spring load on the screw messed up my feel for what the screw was doing. After popping a head off, I went to Harbor Freight and found a wrench with the appropriate range for about 20$. Even if this el cheapo wrench is off by 20%, it's closer than I was.
 
some guys believe they have a calibrated wrist. el cheapo wrench @ 20% accuracy~!! ha ha h a ha that is a good one right on brother!! I like it !! I use mine every time .

ever get to a clutch someone put red loctite in the threaded hub bosses???

not careful on reverse pressure and SPAP!! aluminum boss and all

propane torch to release the glue what a day ... buy a new hub

I scuff the steels with a scotch pad & soak the fibres overnight no problems yet :-D

Well I've actually replaced the springs before but was wary in case I'd left them a little loose... maybe not. Why would you loctite them? Surely spring pressure means they won't back out anyway.

Thanks all for the advise. The plates have soaked overnight already.
