A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Hey all, new member 'czeching' in :) First things first:

GS1000G.jpg

This is my new GS1000G, model year 1981, from Germany, 56000 km on the odometer.

My story: Last year, I started commuting on a scooter (Vespa LX125), and soon figured out that although buzzing through Prague streets was great fun (still is!), it's not exactly the best for touring the countryside. I wanted to go (a bit) faster, (a lot) further - my dream was to travel across Europe on a touring bike. After upgrading my driver's licence, I started to look for a bike for an "ambitious beginner".

I knew I wanted a larger bike (being a larger fellow), not necessarily fast, but with lots of character, old-schoolness and reliability (and shiny parts!). After doing my research, I finally decided to go for a GS with a shaft drive. I was initially looking to get a GS850G, but I stumbled upon this beauty. She was a little too strong for a beginner like me, and also pricier than I wanted, so I was a bit sceptical. I went through my checklist. I started her up and listened. I took her for a test ride. I slept on it. The next morning I came back for her.

The ride home was an hour of GS goodness, she started eagerly, handled great, sounded great, I knew I did the right thing. The very next day, the bike refused to even start :) I guess that means enough fun for now, time to give her some attention, which is fine, I expected to get my hands dirty. I have next to none mechanical experience (though I have some background in electrical engineering), but I'm eager to learn (and willing to fail a few times).

I'll later post the details of what I'm going to do to the bike, in hopes someone will correct me before screwing up too much :) Wish me luck!

Oh and I would like to issue a Mega-ThankYou to BassCliff for his Mega-Welcome, and to all the other authors of Stator Papers and countless other helpful materials here on this site. Simply put, I wouldn't have dared to go for a bike like this if it wasn't for this place.

Thanks so much!

Marek

Thanks for Czeching in :xsmilie_mrgreen:. Some say the 1000g is the most comfortable of the GS line. You seem to have a fine one. Welcome!

Welcome to the Forum. That is a beautiful bike. It looks like basic maintenance and sorting out the charging system gremlins will have you a fine bike for many years to come.

Looks totally unmessed with apart from the white Giuliari (the Germans took a shine to that colour in particular for some reason).

You've got a good un there. Usual maintenance catch up and she'll run a treat.

Love the color scheme, although not crazy about seat color. Check out Basscliff's site, he's a member here and you'll find almost all the info you need to have it purring down the road (or up), if not there is plenty of knowledge from a lot of great members.

Sounds like your a pretty logical, practical fella. You and 'her' and going to make a good pair. Love my 1000G, couldn't have a better bike for sure. Welcome to the site, and it's sure nice to hear that the good old GS resources is out there helping people make good choices.....heck without us you might have bought a Kawasaki!! :p

Many fine examples of the shafties still around in Europe, especially in Spain probably because the drier climate preserves them a bit better.
I've just been onto a Czech website about Jawa 1960 two stroke bike parts, amazing what you can get out from that country at half the price of everywhere else.

Hi, Marco Polo! Nice bike! Electrical engineer? Well! It's great that you've run into an electrical issue as your first and probably only issue. I guess that Bad battery and charging is the most common problem on the forum. Second is the gas tap.
