No drive - what happened?

My bike is broken, again.

I went to pull away hard in 1st gear from a stop and suddenly lost power in all gears. Makes more noise in 2nd than it does in 1st when I rev it. I've never had the right side of the bike open so when should I expect?

Then pull back the drive shaft boot and see if there is anything wrong in the secondary drive flange area.

Ok I have pulled the boot this and do not see any damage. The noise sounds like it is forward of this area. When I release the clucth in 2nd or 3rd the bike pulses forward with the engine speed.

Update: I see the shaft turning at the boot! So maybe trouble is at rear wheel? I do not umderstand why all the noise is at the engine.

I am not sure what to open next - please advise

Pull the clutch cover if it sounds like where the noise is coming from.
Put the bike on the sidestand, you don't even have to drain the oil first.

PULL the rear wheel. Even if the hub spline is stripped, it will grab enough with the bike on the stand and nobody on it to spin the wheel. Your bike is notorious for stripping the rear hub spline. If that is NOT the problem (and you HAVE to remove the spline from the wheel to see the damage) then I would check your bevel gears..

You need to take the bolts out and inspect THIS

if the teeth are gone (as they often are) or even worn badly, it needs replaced

I pulled the clutch cover but everything looks good here as far as I can tell - loose loose pieces anyway

Hmm. That does look bad. I had mine off about 1000 miles ago and it was in really good shape.There is no noise at the rear at all but I'll probably pull it off tomorrow even though all the noise seems to be coming from the other end of the shaft

Inside view, bad. It was still working when I pulled it but I doubt for very much longer.

If you need one look around at the usual suppliers, Steve :clap: posted a while back that Cycle Parts Nation and Babbits had OEM replacements listed for $ 45. I lucked out and bought two for that price but they have since caught the error on thier pricing. Maybe someone else has not. They normally are about $ 115. You can also find them on fleabay but I prefer the OEM replacements, they are a superceeded part number, Silver in color and much better than the original softer Gold colored ones used on 81-84 models from the factory. Get some Moly Honda paste and you are good to go.

Well, at the moment I am trying to figure out how I am going to support the bike with no center stand and no lift. I've got a two-tom car jack, some stands, some good straps, and some wood. I started thinking about just this last night when I was lying in bed so thanks for the explanation. Now I just need to figure out how I'm going to get the bike in the air safely without a center stand and lift...

Open the seat and put a strap around the rear section of the frame, then lift it by the tail. make an A frame, chain fall it to the rafters in the garage (support well if necessary), use a cherry picker, a 4X4 through the strap and supported on each side, use whatever you've got... the possibilities are endless.
