    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I'm sure I'm opening a can of worms here, but what kind of oil are you running in your bikes? So far I've just bought my oil from Suzuki and its not expensive, but I'm curious to see what others are running.
 
I run Castrol 20/50.
And away we go...................................
 
Castrol 20W50 and I change it every four months (approx 1000-miles)
 
amsoil 20w50, shell rotella 15w40, shell rotella synthetic 5w40...
 
Fleet Farm 10w40, same as I run in my Jeep.:-D Oil changed every 1500 miles, oil & filter every 3000, which is what my Haynes manual recommends.
 
15w/40 diesel engine oil is a good choice as long as the temps are not too cold. I run 5W/40 Rotella synthetic in my 550 because it's my baby :) and I like to waste money on it. :)

Just a couple of weeks ago, I wrote Castrol a letter concerning the elimination of 'zinc' in many motor oils. They sent me a list of their oils that still have a reasonable zinc content, if I can find it I will post it.

Personally, I use 15w40 Diesel oil (your brand) because it does have the higher zinc to reduce wear from scuffing and does not have any additives that are detrimental to clutch function.

You absolutely do NOT want to run any oil that has the words "Energy Saving" or the "star" logo on the bottle, those oils are intended for late model cars that all have "roller valve lifters" and have NO zinc to protect older engines sliding metal parts. The cam and lifters on our Suzukis are the "sliding metal to metal" type.

Quaker State non-detergent 30 weight. I change it every 5 years even if it doesn't need it.

Castrol 10W40, except for the hottest part of the summer when I might use a 20W50. I use the lighter 10W40 to help ensure the oil flows easier after starting a cold engine. Plus that's what's recommended in my owners manual.

I also change oil after about 2,000 miles

Castrol did NOT recommend their 10w40 when they responded to my question to them. I will bet if you look, that viscosity has the "Energy Star" and says "Fuel Saving" on the bottle. Those are definite "No-Nos" on an oil container unless you have a new car with roller valve lifters.

Be careful, things that we have done for 20 years are not longer valid!

10W40 oil (including Castrol) does not have an emblem marked "Energy Conserving" and does not contain the friction modifiers of the oil marked this way. "Energy Conserving" oil is usually 5W-30 or 10W-30, and the viscosity is never over 30 weight.
 
Mobil 1. Always ran the car 10-30 but now I use the bike specific 10-40. Running hard, hot, and long there's no substitue for the protection it offers.
Been using it in an 88 Pathfinder since 10K. Now have over 293K and never a hiccup or engine problem. Costs more. Always clean innards during maintenance.

I run my GS1000s on castrol Gtx 15,40 the old gs has done about 80000 mls
 
Castrol 10W40. No Troubles at All, but it Appears that CHANGING the Oil on a Regular Basis is Way More Important that the Brand or Type!:)
