DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Petrol smell

Morning all. Over the weekend I rode from Plymouth (UK) to Thruxton for our local round of British Superbikes. Distance was approx 140 miles each way. Bike ran absolutely great but when I stopped at the circuit and at the rest stop along the way I noticed there was a strong smell of petrol. The carbs weren't leaking but the starter motor cover plate looked damp. I'm thinking I might need to re-set the float heights and replace the float bowl gaskets.
Anything else anyone can think of? All advice / suggestions gratefully accepted.

Apologies, my bike is a 1978 GS750

If float height problem, I'd think fuel should drain through overflow tubes & the bottom of the tubes are usually hidden. May be an idea, put bike on center stand, disconnect drain tubes from bowl nipples & run eng. for a few minutes, watching for a drip out of one of the nipples, or possibly a drip off a bowl, if a gasket problem.

Ta muchly for the responses. I will check the fuel tap gasket, the float bowl drains aren't visibly dripping but I will give them a clean off and check.

Float height for me also.... fuel is likely soaking your bowl gaskets and it's slowly evaporating.

Morning all. Might have found the issue, the drain screws are weeping fuel. More so on the left side which would make sense as this side is lower when it's on the side stand.

Found some o rings in work that fit just need to replace the rest and see if things improve.

Thanks again for all the help.

When that happened to me it was at the core caused by a leaky petcock... As it was a relatively new one I was able to clean some dirt out of the diaphragm and it cured it. If yours is old I'd replace it... :)
