A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Does anyone know if the circlips that hold the pistons pins in place are fairly universal? I have a 77 gs 550 that needs a new set. I'm in the process of ordering a few odds and ends. I've found a few sites that have them listed as 15mm but unfortunately all my manuals were left in the workshop so I can't double check. I know they are only .89 a piece, but I figure why order the wrong ones if it can be avoided.
thanks

Well, after doing a quick cross reference with the part number at Babbits, there are 17 pages of bikes that use the same one.....so, I'm guessing that they're interchangeable.:)

Why not just buy the ones you KNOW are the right ones ?

And I take back what I said in the previous post. There are 17 pages that fit my '81GS750L, there are 7 pages that fit your bike and they are different part numbers......:)

The diameter of the wrist pin determines which circlip will fit.

I don't know where you are planning to buy these circlips from, but I would think twice about it. I have looked up a number of Suzuki factory sites and none of them give the circlip size.

They only give the part number, which is 09381-16001 for your '77 550.

Just order them from a Suzuki dealer. They came on 170 different models and according to Alpha Sports are $1.62 ea. and they are one of the most expensive parts suppliers around. My point is you will not break the bank buying 8 of these from a dealer.

But if you MUST know the size then here it is:

OD is 18mm (obviously not fitted to the piston), bit hard to measure the OD when the circlip is in the piston.

ID when fitted to piston is 15.4mm, so the OD is going to be a bit larger than that.

The other point you have not covered is the diameter of the wire. It must fit the groove in the piston.

Just get them from a dealer at $1.62 ea.
