Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

REAL MEN Work

The way he stomps his feet when the protective rags ignite....Jeeze! And the guy in the red turban checking his phone between shuffling glowing red hot strands of iron. Wow
I'll never look at rebar the same.

Unfortunately, most recycling is a myth. Plastic, for instance. Here in NY City, we're told to separate all plastic in the garbage. As much as 91% of it still goes directly to landfills (or is shipped to "developing" countries, where much of it ends up in their waterways and on their beaches).

The small amounts that are recycled are part of the problem, not part of the solution. And less than 1% is ever recycled more than once. But the plastic industry tells us otherwise.

You should see them break up ships ...... I've spent a considerable amount of time in India and being a seaman on one trip I wanted to see the shipyards in Alang ..... Alang isn't really a city it's a community devoted to workers who break up the ships .... It's not a tourist friendly town .... Closest airport and place to stay is Bhavnagar about 50 or 60 kliks away . I don't remember exactly . Then hire a car and driver and head out . One thing that ticked me off was you weren't allowed to take pictures .... But I was used to that. I had a guy hired who's sole job was to pack around and guard my cameras in places I wasn't allowed to take them .....India is weird that way. They don't allow photography in a lot of places ..... But it was something to see..... A giant swarm of workers descend on the ship which has been driven up on the sand and using torches and mallets basically beat the ship apart ..... Best viewed from a distance as the decible level is high when close. A lesson I quickly learned ...... The torch workers often go blind in later life .....

Pretty much everything in India is recycled . Hard to believe they have a garbage problem but they do and it is a massive problem . Drop an empty Bic lighter on the ground and it will be scooped up by some enterprising entrepreneur to be refilled and sold again ..... When a friend of mine's grandkid dropped the TV remote in his beer glass I said I guess we know what we're doing this afternoon .... Nope a phone call and 15 minutes later someone who has a massive amount of spare parts picks it up and two hours later it's it's returned fully functional ...... I once was headed for the camera market in Old Delhi and my friend asked me to take a video camera and have it repaired. He said they'll do it while you are there ..... Sure enough I find a place and in front of me he takes this thing apart so fast it looks like he worked on the assembly line ..... Then reaches up to a wall of spare parts and fifteen minutes later I'm out of there ...... If it's broken they don't throw it away, someone uses it for spare parts ..... But like I said they still have a massive garbage problem ...... Go figure ?

By the way .... As you don't know what metals are in that rebar it should be noted that India also has a ...... " Buildings falling down for unknown reasons " problem ...... The reasons for the unknown part of that is in India money talks ...... I had another friend who's dad was accused of murdering his brother . My friend told me he was pretty sure he did it .....He just spread enough cash around that he died of old age before it came to trial ......

Pretty sure that's where this was filmed

That makes sense .... I didn't see that part of the place but it would make sense to do the recycling on site. As many of the workers have their families sitting around I just hired one of their kids to give us a tour . My driver spoke English so he could translate for the kid ..... I suspect he took us to vantage points that he wasn't allowed to cross ..... A couple of times he would shake his head no, meaning no further ..... To be honest I wouldn't have wanted a tour of that particular recycling place . For the simple reason it is bloody hot without adding furnaces to the equation ......

The lax enviro and worker safety and wages is key.
lots of older vessels were chock full of asbestos and other magical stuff.
the youtube took me down a battleship rabbit hole lately.
lots of well meaning types think every scow that flew the white ensign is treasure warranting preservation.
nice vid here bombastically grants insight.
last battleship built HMS vanguard turned into pop cans and pencil eraser ferrules

You nailed it ! .... Those goggles you see the torch workers wearing aren't worth sh!t .... It isn't a matter of it you are going to go blind it's when ..... I was once having lunch sitting at a restaurant with an outdoor balcony and two guys were harassing a blind man sitting on the street ..... In India it doesn't matter if it's street parking some enterprising pirate is going to make money on it.... I sent my waiter over to see what was going on and they were trying to get the blind man to move on so they could charge for the parking spot ...... So I told the waiter to find out how much the parking spot was and I paid for it ..... Then I told him to bring him a meal .... The waiter explained to me that we had to be careful about that or we'd make him sick ..... Anyway he fed him ......By this time the two pirates are starting to be nice to the guy and get his story for me { Probably because they realized they had a mark ... Me } A former welder who was blinded by his trade ..... He looked to be in his fifties but apparently was in his forties ....... No workers compo in India .....

Don't get me wrong India is my favorite country in the world and I've logged a lot of time there ........ But India is no friend of the working man ......

What are you doing in Canada? Why aren't you in your "favorite country"?

What are you doing in Canada? Why aren't you in your "favorite country"?

I had planned on retiring there .... However for medical reasons I am now firmly attached to Kanada ..... Can't even visit anymore unfortunately .......

There are three places in south Asia that basically beat ships apart .... Gadani in Pakistan, Alang in India, and Chittagong in Bangladesh ..... I tried Googling it to see if there was anyone else in the world that does it this way but I wasn't successful .... But I suspect there may be some African Nations getting in on this .....I do know China has a ship breaking industry { we've sent a few there from B.C. Canada } but I have no idea how they go about it ..... We do have a place on Vancouver Island that breaks up ships ....But on a much smaller scale and in a little more civilized way. It is however surrounded by protesters and under investigation for polluting ..... With the amount of attention it's getting I suspect it won't be around for long ......

It would be much more environmentally friendly if ships were made of wood, again.
Just let them return to nature, as nature intended.
Can you imagine the size of the tree the dug-out canoes would be?

WHAAAAT???? I thought we were needing to conserve our forests and trees !!! Environmentally friendly ???
