hey guys,

so GS 300's dont have a tachometer stock, but i would like to put one on my bike. its got a input gear drive and everything, and i can get the oem gear and cable online. my friends got a beautiful tach off a cx500. The tach starts its redline at 8.5k rpms!! I'm almost 100% sure thats way to high for the 300, i was wondering if any of you knew or could approximate (guess:p) where my bike would redline (factory settings), so i could mark it on the tach.

Thanks!!

does that mean the redline starts at 10k rpm?!?!?!

i want to know where it starts, so i can avoid that range (most of the time:eek:)

Yes, shift at 10k. Won't hurt the engine one bit.

When I explain this to people I like to say engines don't have a redline per say, they have a usable power-band and mechanical limits.

If 10K is at the top of your powerband, even if the bike is capable of accelerating past that - it's not putting down the power it would be in the next gear at a lower RPM. Thus when people say 10K rpm is your redline, they actually mean don't rev the engine past 10K because you're then starting to push it's mechanical limits on top of losing power.

It's pretty crazy that any motorcycle would come with out a tach, I think all vehicles should come with one but that's just me. I'm glad you will be installing one - sounds like you are pretty enthusiastic about high-revving so you'll need it.

red line on 300 should be the same as the 250 but power drops big time by about 9K rpm.

the red line is just the manufacturers way of saying this is as fast as we recomend because bad things can happen past this point.

my car is listed as red line at 7000, and the ecm pulls the plug at 7200rpm but the power drops fast past 6000. running all the way to red line just slows down the acceleration.

big question is does the CX500 tach use the same gear ratio as the GS?? it might not read right, a cluster from a GS250 may be a better bet.

huh....

i thought that the tach just needs the cable input and uses how fast the cable spins to determine the rpms, so if i got the correct gear for the tach input in the motor i thought then the cable would be spinning the correct rpms, and it wouldn't matter what tach to use...

is this right or wrong?

My 82 650cc redline starts at only 9500rpm and ends at 12.

I always thought it would start alittle higher than that.

But the bike moves plenty fast for me, no need to go into redline.

----

The only time i've entered into redline, was on my old mustang.
It wasn't stock, and had a tuned ECU.

Other than that, I don't see what peoples obsession is with "redline"......maybe they've watched "the fast and the furious" one, two many times?

90% of cars out there actually LOSE power once they touch redline.
(just like everyone else has already stated)

I knew quite a few people who found that out the hard way, when they fried their rings or saw a piston fly threw their hood.:D

does it matter what tach one uses as long as the input gear and the tach cable are specific to the bike? (my previous post)

It shouldn't...

As you stated, as long as the cable spins at the correct gear ratio for the engine, the tach will follow. Electronic tachs that are "multi purpose" and multi fit, use the same principle only they are governed by electronic pulses.

I don't know much but I'm not sure if it will work. If you look at this page, you'll see that the tachs have different ratios listed. The honda cbx500 will have the 1:7 ratio, but the suzuki will have the 1:4 ratio. Again, I'm no authority so I can be completely wrong. I hope it works out for you.

And in this case, you would want to do the math for both ends of the tach. Much the same way that you gear a bike when changing both front and rear sprockets. Either way, you're going to be very close to actual rpms.

gs 300

gs 300

i have a 1982 gs-300-l that i bought for my daughter to ride. i just listen to the sound of the motor but i don't think it's good for more than 8000 rpm. i also believe that the 250 turns a lot more rpm...good luck..

Best part of boring out my 1000G was the additional low end. Stock it wouldn't pull for crap until about 4000, and didn't REALLY start to pull until about 7000. Now I can actually twist the throttle at 2500 or 3000 and it will go pretty well.

haha my little monster (the 300) pulls pretty hard low end (at least me, a teenager). sounds like a racebike the higher rpm i go :D
