Replace GS1100E anti-dive with 550E adjusters

Does anybody know if you can replace the anti-dive valves on the 1982+ GS1100E with the damping adjusters from the late model GS550E damping adjusters?

Both the AD and the adjustable dampers basically meter the flow of oil to alter compression damping, except the 550E units just give you a fixed adjustment and the 1100E units give you a hydraulically-controlled adjustment based on brake line pressure.

It looks like installing the 550E adjusters might be easier and better than block-off plates.

I think that's a great idea. All you need to do on an 1100e fork is meter the flow between the 2 ports, at least for compression. I have a pair of block off plates from Demon Speed that I was thinking of putting needle valves in for the same concept. Try it and see what happens.

after i asked, i started looking at all kinds of GS forks and saw that they look like the 1150 units. they did have a different part number on partsoutlaw.com for the 1150 and the 550 though.

the hard part is locating some. im going over my twinpots/mastercyl/rotors right now and i kinda want to either get a block off plate or something like this so i dont have to run the extra brake line as well as deal with the crusty brake fluid/corrosion that may/will be in the stock 82 antidive brake fluid side of things.

Watching this thread. I was just contemplating the anti-dive units on my 1100 and was just going to get block off plates milled but if this works it could be an interesting development, assuming one could source the full units from the 550.

I think that I finally understood what the OP was asking.(Duh!) I found the click-type anti-dive adjusters (1150E?) that he was talking about and
installed one on a stock '83 1100E fork leg for all to see.



They are not a direct bolt on but might be made to fit with some effort. The bolt spacing is diferent and the O-ring spacing is different.
I placed the block off plate that was on the '83 fork next to the late model anti-dive unit and hope that the pic is clear enough to see the spacing differences.

It is not currently snowing out and I believe that I just may have some of those on an '86 model somewhere in the back forty. If so, I will try to fit them on the 1100E forks also.

Apparently not only were those not from an 1150, they were from a 550ES and I had them mounted upside down in that pic.

So the general concensus is that they don't quite fit? Worth making adapter plates for?

In pondering this, I've thought of just modifying my stock anti dives to have a threaded adjuster to replace the brake fluid actuator possibly though I haven't taken them apart yet.

Not a great shot, but these are 84 550ES forks are sitting in my garage doing nothing.

The anti dives appear to be different. I have 3 1150 anti-dives off the bike I could take a picture of tomorrow and compare to the 550.

With a channel between the two ports so that fluid can still flow (see in the Pic in earlier post).
