DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Replacing a camshaft sprocket?

Cant find any information on this after lots of surfing.
I bought a spare head a while ago and the cams and journals are in great shape, but the sprockets are for the gs650g and 650gl, so of no use for a 650e.
The sprocket bolts are torqued to the max with at least semi permanent loctite.
Wondering how to get enough leverage on these two bolts to remove the sprockets.
Anyone been down this road?

Small blowtorch or electric heat gun and heat the bolts and where they screw into, will soften up the loctite.

Be careful with the torque when retightening, I had assumed that all the cam sprocket bolt torques would be the same across all the GS(X) models and their workshop manuals. I was wrong. Getting cast iron welded is expensive.

Just say'in if your sprockets have been slotted or if slotted sprockets have been installed, those bolts, in my opinion, will need to be tighter than on OEM sprockets.

I got the old sprockets off, but now I'm trying to figure out how to hold the cams in place in order to torque the bolts to max 19 ft-lbs. Any suggestions?
is the 303 thread lock essential or is there a sufficient substitute that I can find at an auto store?

Use a pair of mole grips on the cam shanks. Any decent auto store should be able to provide an equivalent for the specified thread locker.

Thanks Grims,

Was able to get it done with one vice grip clamped on the shank close to the sprocket. It held firm.
Had to use a long socket extension to clear the lobes which made it a bit unstable.
