A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

After nearly 18 years ownership and with 270,000ks on the clock The Dirty Old Pig is finally The Clean New Pig.To celebrate it being like a new bike I decided to rewind the speedo and although I found 2 threads on the subject they didn't cover my gauges and so I had to do things a bit differently.I'm using 30 photos to show what I did step by step so bear with me as it way take a while to get it posted.

I'm already struggling with downloading! This could take weeks.

The first step is to remove the trip meter seal using a blunt knife.
DSC01312.jpg

To allow for the trip meter shaft while cutting the speedo in half I used a 4inch by 1mm cutting disc which has a 5/8 centre.A bolt and 2 nuts allowed it to mount in my drill press.AS the glass is convex I used a 32212 bearing cup to allow me to keep the speedo level. The cut should be made as close as possible to the trip lever to enable easy removal of the speedo. With gentle pressure 4 or 5 turns will see the speedo in 2 pieces and will ensure you don't push the cutting disc into the mechanicals.

Next undo the 2 screws at the bottom and the speedo will come out.

The next bit is the hardest part of the job.Sand the fluff off the 2 speedo halves and then clean the glass. If you work out how to get glass perfectly clean then the rest is east.

To remove the dial get 2 teaspoons and put them on the screws that hold the face on,then put them under the dial and light pressure will see the dial pop off.

Rover, a couple of years ago there was a poll showing how many miles all the bikes had done and I was amazed at how few miles most had done so I think more speedos need to be wound forward rather than backwards.
Hampshiredog you are right but a lot of Katanas break the needle and this shows a safe way to remove it.
The next step is to remove the drive box which is held on by 4 screws.

The magnets will probably look like the first example and I believe and I hope the experts will confirm, that this is the major cause of the needles bouncing.A clean up with 400 wet and dry makes them look like the second example.

Now put your glasses on to remove the little e clip which holds
DSC01345.jpg
the odometer together.

Now slide the black wheels to create space to turn the wheels.Start with the mile wheel and centre it in the gap and it will turn freely. When it's done mesh it into the white wheel and move onto the 10mile wheel.Keep going until you've got a brand new bike.

Now put the glasses back on to replace the clip.I use a pair of pliers to get the clip in position before flicking it back into place.

I had a tacho showing 11,000revs while stopped because of a broken spring. If you have this problem start by removing the clip that holds the trip meter in place.
DSC01351.jpg

Now remove the bracket that holds the trip meter in place and remove the trip meter.
DSC01352.jpg

If your spring is broken use a strong, sharp knife to lever the spring holder open to remove the broken end, then hold the end of the spring in the holder and squeeze it back over.
