Richard Hammond’s Motorcycle collection

I don't agree that the R100RT is boring....I think they are an awesome bike....one of these days I will own a boxer airhead...one of these I hope

How about a nice oil head boxer? I know a guy that is willing to sell his:single_eye:.

I'd have another one tomorrow. I knocked up a boatload of miles on my R80RT, and it had done a boatload before, in polis service.
That's the one I put the R100 barrels, pistons and carbs on. Combined with the OE gearing, it turned it into a stump-puller.

I am curious about the blue, early model Lotus Europe in front of the two green Kawasakis.
When he gets to the Norton about 3:11, you get a good look.
Either a series 1 or 2, but it doesn't look stock.

Me too. "F zed r"...funny.

Anyone know where he got the money?

Definitely Top Gear and the "Grand Tour" as well as all the spin-off shows. I expect Drivetribe makes a decent amount nowadays too....

Yeah it's strange listening to someone pronounce the alphabet properly innit.... :p;)

Yep...the way us Canadians pronounce it too. :)

For the record..."Z" is pronounced "zee." There is no "d" involved in any way, shape or form. Zed One, indeed! Why not Zed Lepplin?

The Beatles were permitted to say that their film "Help" was in "colour" because they were The Beatles. :abnormal:

Hammond is an aficionado, but his bit on the GSX-R1100 was pretty incorrect on both ends of its reasoning. Not only were very sporting 600s (and 750s) around when that Gixxer came out, I4 motors continued to grow (cf., Hayabusa, ZX-14, etc.) long afterward.

I believe he was talking about how the flagship sport bikes reverted back to 1,000 cc (and stayed there).

I don't think so, and he was incorrect about sub-literbikes as well.

He stated, "This was the end of the capacity race," not "This was the end of the race replica capacity race."

And even if he was making that claim, the fact that he then wanders over to Ducatis should remind us that 1000 cc was not even the end of capacity for ultra-sports (cf. Panigale 1299, etc.)

I don’t care what he said really… I’m jealous every which way :-\\\

I guess this piece is mostly for the cage enthusiasts (or the crossover ones of which I’m a member so it doesn’t matter too much if he’s 100% correct or not).

I think what he was trying to say was that was the ultimate bad boy for its time and probably for a while after. :)

All fine and well, but he was incorrect on several points. Not sure why that doesn't matter among motorheads. I always care about accuracy.

I find his collection lacking. Lacking the CB750 four, the Kawasaki 500 and 750 2 stroke triples, the Kawasaki Z1, just to mention the most glaring omissions.
Probably has something to do with the way he pronounces the last letter of the alphabet. :eagerness:

The pronunciation of the letter 'Z' as 'zed' rather than 'zee' is a result of language change and regional variations. The 'zed' pronunciation is more conventional, derived from the Greek letter 'Zeta' and the Old French 'zede', which affected English's evolution. With the exception of the United States, the majority of English-speaking countries employ this pronunciation. The 'zed' pronunciation gained popularity in the United States, and it is thought to have been influenced by how other letters in the alphabet rhyme, such as B, C, and P. Noah Webster's dictionaries and the Alphabet Song, which rhymed 'zee' with'me', helped to popularise it even more.

It's always funny when Americans argue about the structure of the English language (with those who speak a more pure form of it).
