I don't know exactly why or how long it will last, but Dennis Kirk has significantly lower prices than other vendors right now (as of June 22, 2009) on the Avon RoadRider tire sizes that fit G model shafties and the 82-83 1100E.

130/90-17 rear
100/90-19 front (actually a front/rear)

I just ordered a set for $165 delivered.

All the other vendors I've checked are at least $200/set delivered for these.

WHOLEY Crap!!! Thats near as cheap as CS crappers... Please let it last till pay day...PLEASE..

They've got the Cheng Shin HiMax rears in that size (130/90-17) on clearance for under fifty bucks, too. No CS 100/90-19 fronts, though, but if you just want some rear treads for cheap, it's a pretty good choice.

Duro seems to have taken over the "?ber-cheap Chinese tire" market position vacated by Cheng Shin.

I've got a Shinko 705 dual-sport tire on the back of my VX800 that's fantastic and cost $90 less than the Avon Distanzia. (Shinko is actually a Korean brand.)

There are some surprisingly good Asian tires out there.

Anyway, back to the topic at hand, the made-in-England RoadRiders are excellent tires. I think this will be the ninth set I've installed on my bikes and on bikes belonging to friends.

+1 on the Roadriders. I've installed 5 sets. Could have picked up two brand new fronts for my bike this past weekend at a swap meet for next to nothing. Didn't know when I would get around to using them though, which is too bad. Great tire, even if they aren't all that cheap.

Looking at current ?-$ exchange rates I don't see any reason why this pricing won't last... I think the main reason behind the around Christmas - Spring hike was the exchange rate at 2.05:1. Currently at about 1.6:1 has led to prices dropping back down.

Good info. Since they're likely the largest retailer by far, it would make sense if Dennis Kirk would pass on the price changes before others.

It's a screaming deal for rubber this good. These tires (sorry, tyres) will make a GS feel 100 pounds lighter, and they behave themselves beautifully as they wear too.

FYI,
The Avons seem to have a very round profile which has very low turn in force. I put a set on my stock 81 GS750EX and it would literally flick side to side with noticeab;e ease and would have to be pulled (with moderate force) back up (from the lean angle) out of the turn.

In contrast my GS1100ED, with a 4K miles on a worn Sport demon on the back and a nearly flat center with thick side profiles feels like you have to wrestle it into the corner and when you stop pushing it comes back up.:o

The sport demons are great tires before they wear out. The force required was ,much less previously I must assume. Unfortunately most of my ED miles have been on GS rally's and the transit miles have taken the toll on the tire centers.

wow that is a deal, too bad i just put a new set on within the last 4 months :( same tires too, size and all :p

This G project bike of mine is turning into a money pit. While changing the fork seals I realized the brake pads were saturated with fork fluid and pretty thin too. I ordered a set of EBC HHs this morning. Then, this afternoon, I noticed the front tire was close to being worn out. The rear tire is a Challenger with plenty tread but a Challenger none the less. I decided to bite the bullet and buy a pair of the Avons from Dennis Kirk. I'm looking forward to seeing how the bike handles with the new rubber.

Lookin forward to WV next weekend

Still $164.98 delivered in the Continental US at Dennis Kirk. :D

You'll love the tires. The first few corners are a little startling until you get used to how quickly they make the bike steer.

Is the cracking sidewalls still an issue with these tires? There was a thread on this forum a while ago about this tire.

Just one batch were a problem it seems... haven't heard any more about it for a while.

Dan :)

Agreed -- I think it was one batch of one size. I've never seen a problem with these sizes, or with several other sets of RoadRiders I've installed.

Then again, tires lead short, brutal, but eventful lives on my bikes, so I have no idea if they last longer than 6 months. :D

twr1776 and I both ordered sets in the last 2 months and installed them. Haven't had any problem or seen anything of the sort.

My tires are scheduled to arrive on Monday. Pads should be here today. New fork seals and fluid went in yesterday. I'm staying optimistic that the G will be road tested and ready by Friday so I can bring it to WV.
