In GS parlance, what is a "skunk," and why is it so called?

The tank has to have the indentation where the stripe goes too...

There’s got to be a more recent start thread than 2009...I know the question has been asked within the past couple of years.

1978 GS1000 "E", they were the only Skunks, only the 78 "E" was black w/ white stripe, indent in tank & tail + & cast wheels & dual frt. brakes.

Wouldn't that make it the very first GS1000, the one that dethroned the KZ1000?

Nope, that would be the GS 1000 (sometimes referred to as a C model), In some markets there appears to be an HC model

But '78s also, correct? As I recall it, the '77 GS750 was so quick, I wasn't surprised when the GS1000, introduced in the U.S. in '78, became quickest in the quarter mile. I recall Cycle World saying it was due to more extreme cams.

It made it onto a backup drive so I think it's in for the long haul. I'm adding the cleaned up one however.
