Reliving my youth I’ve purchased an exceptionally clean 1977 GS750 that has had an 850 kit recently installed. The bike starts immediately with full choke & no throttle, but I can’t get it to idle. I can control the revs by adjusting the choke, but without choke it cuts out. Apparently the carbies have been cleaned and have new needles/jets. So I’m thinking the issue is points, timing or carbies. Any advice please ?

I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. Returning Visitors
If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.
If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

What carbs is it running? Standard carbs Mikuni VM26 or something else?
If you have Suzuki VM26's, listen to Zed however, make sure you remove both idle circuit screws and check for broken tips. One in the rear and one in the front. If it runs on the choke circuit don't go chasing an ignition problem. Also, you mentioned the big bore kit. You sure it still has points?

To rphillips - it was cutting out as soon as the choke was off of a fraction on. And any throttle would just kill it immediately, irrespective of the choke position

AFTER SENDING MY FIRST MESSAGE I SPENT ANOTHER HOUR PLAYING WITH THE BIKE.
After keeping the choke on (but low at under 2000rpm) for a good 5min, I finally managed to keep the bike idling (a little rough) with no choke.
I then slowly increased the revs up and down in a roughly 1000-3500rpm range. That seems to have fixed the issue - whether temporarily or permanently, I have no idea.
Today - 24 hours later - I started it on choke, let it warm up for a minute or two, shut down the choke completely and now it idles nicely. Took it for a 500m run down a long service driveway and shifted through the gears and accelerated smoothly.
Maybe bad fuel (only a few months old), maybe gum in the carbies (despite new needles and gets in the last 2 years).
who knows?
I’ll keep playing for another week or two then hopefully a Roadworthy and Club Rego.
