Stator Measurements - 450/550/650/850/1000 Owners who have one out of the bike?

Guys, just wondering if someone can do me a quick favour and take some measurements of their stator? Mine's toast and I can get an Electrex one here for what I think is a reasonable price ($115.50) but the guy selling them wants to be doubly sure it's the right one so he doesn't sell me the wrong thing.

The Electrex model is G01 and it has an outer diameter of 93mm, inner diameter of 35mm, and thickness through the holes 18mm.

I've attached the pic he sent me of the unit also.

If anyone with one of the models in the subject has one handy they could measure that would be awesome!

I'm trying to avoid pulling the stator out until I need to so I can keep riding in the meantime...

There are two types of stators, the old and the new type. The new type has 18 poles and works universally. The older type was about 10 or 12 poles and uses a different rotor.
Electosport or Electrix has a chart that should tell you what you need to know,

Cajun one pulled from my 650; outer dia 93 mm, hole dia 34.4 mm. thickness at hole maybe 18mm; thickness at pole extreme 26 mm. The pole thickness would vary slighty from different suppliers depending on the laminations they used. Another one I have is almost 28 mm thick at poles.

Thanks for the info Duaneage, I wasn't aware of that!

The pic definitely shows 18 poles and looking at the Electrex World site as opposed to the local distributors site doesn't really give me any more information other than size and model fitment. I guess I just want to double check the measurements to be sure...

Neither site mentions the need for a different rotor and given the punishment my thumb took when taking the rotor off the first time I don't want to go through that again if I can avoid it

Thanks very much Tom, sounds like it compares nicely with those three measurements they gave me :)

I think between yours and Duanage's info I should be right to order come pay day ;)

OK the one off my 78 1000 is 103mm across the poles,37mm ID and 18mm though the holes. For what that's worh to you.

Thanks Greg, looks like there's two different ones for the 1000's after all that depending on model etc. Yours matches up with their G02 model...

I reckon I'm sorted now with the G01 now though :)

Hi,

I found this on some guy's website:

All of these bikes use the same stator. This should make it easier to find a replacement if you want to go with a used part. Note that you may have to install your own connectors. See my Stator Replacement guide.

Some aftermarket stators will have varying lengths of output wire. I know Rick's and Caltric have plenty of wire in good braided sheathing and include the grommet. But RMStator and Electrosport can have short wires in cheap plastic sheathing and do not have a grommet. You'll have to re-use the old one.

That picture looks like it has a grommet but cheap plastic sheathing. The sheathing is not critical. It's just that the plastic stuff gets brittle after a while.

Protip: GS500 stators are still in production and pop up cheap on fleaBay all the time.

These bikes are cheap and don't get the love they deserve, so when one little thing goes wrong, people tend to part 'em out instead of dealing with it.

If you're in the market for a spare stator and your bike is on that list, keep an eye out.

My GS850 is currently wearing a stator from a 2001 GS500, and i have a spare stator from a 2005 GS500 on the shelf. My original 1983 GS850 stator went 102,000 miles, so I should be good for a while...

My spare 1000 one measures the same as SVsooke.

103mm across the poles,37mm ID and 18mm though the holes

I need to compare the Kawasaki one that I have as a spare after a tip from Chef1366 - they come up really cheap as well. Paid $15 for it on fleabay.

:)

THIS LIST also contains a lot of Kaws that use the same stator as the list of Suzukis in my previous post. It's the Electrosport part compatibility list.

The list below uses the same stator, but are not compatible with the others listed previously:

GS550ES/ESF (16-valve) (83-86)
GS700EF/ESF (1985)
GS750ES/ESF / GSX750ES/EF (83-87)
GS1000 (78-79)
GS1000G (shaft drive) (80-81)
GS1000S (small fairing) (79-80)
GS1100E/ET/EZ (GSX1100E) (80-83)
GS1150E (GSX1150E) (83-86)
GS1100G (shaft drive) (82-83)

Well ain't that a hoot.Old Yeller and the Skunk share stators.Means I got a spare or three hangin round:D

12 pole stators are for 1979 and older bikes. The rotor has has 3or 4 magnets compared to the 1980 and newer which has one more magnet. I forget the exact number of magnets however, the 18 pole stators have 1 more magnet.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Hi,

I seem to recall the 12 pole stators use 4-magnet rotors and the 18 pole stators use 6-magnet rotors. Being a three phase system, 3x4=12 and 3x6=18. :)

Thanks all... I was really just after comparison measurements to ensure the Electrex would fit...

BassCliff, those lists are very handy and as Steve said, definitely another pat on the back is very much deserved :D

Dale, thanks for the offer of the stator.

Brian, good call on the 500's still using the same stator.

My goal is to get this charging system fixed ASAP and I won't have budget 'til pay day this Wednesday. If I get the Electrex I can have it ready to install next Saturday... had a quick peak on eBay for other stators and the only thing suitable is a GS500 stator including cover for $200

I think the Electrex is going to be the winner... yes I know I'm going against the whole GSR fix it cheap ethos, but I like running my headlight (H4 upgraded) in traffic and am not game to until I get this sorted... and I'm riding her every day in traffic...

hi guys, newby here, just bought a gs650g 81 model... took it to a shop early this week to get it checked, dont have any knowledge on doing electricals on a motorcycle, but i am a fast and good learner. now here is my problem... they said that i need a new stator which would cost me $189 including the gasket, labor is half an hour, saying that they couldnt check the regulator if it has damaged as well.... i would like to do it myself, anyone has a suggestion? how to check if stator is toast? and where can i find a decent stator for a good price? thanks....

That's quite some miles racked up on the '83 GS850, and a bit better than i expected out of the OEM R/R!

I just got done a few hours ago replacing the original OEM R/R with a R/R out of a 2007 Yamaha,....a Shindengen MOSFET FH012AA,.....just in case! :)

BTW, the it was NOT as easy to replace as outlined in BassCliff's link. Seems the bottom of my OEM R/R was mounted via phillip head screws that no-way were coming out without complete removal of the battery box!

......now replaced with 10mm head bolts so should be much easier to replace if ever needed.
