Stuck oil filter cap!

Ok...first off I did the search for this topic and came up pretty much empty handed....so now I am posing the question to all of you......

How the heck do you get a stuck oil filter cap to let go?! I have drained the oil and now I am trying to replace the filter and I removed the 3 nuts successfully but now the darn cap is just sitting there! I have tried tapping lightly around the edges to try and break the seal, nothing....I have tried tapping on the entire cover with a rubber mallet....nothing....I have tried to get a flathead screwdriver into the seal and pry it off....nothing.....so now I am out of ideas on my own....I am in hopes that some of you can offer up something for me to try.....I figured once I released the 3 nuts the darn thing would just pop right off due to the spring inside....but that didn't happen.....:-k

Hope someone can hook me up with a solution to this......:pray::pray::pray::pray:

Thanx.....Anita

spray it with some wd40 or similar, all around the edges and on the studs. leave for an hour or 2 then give it a good tap with a copper mallet or a hammer and an aluminium or brass drift. should break the seal.
sounds like it will need a good clean up and a bit more care when replacing

Use a little heat on the studs. Possibly some corrosion on the studs and cover.

Is this bike new to you?

If so I bet the P.O. used some form of sealer or glue to put the cover on, because it leaked and he was too lazy to get the correct O ring.

I hope it's not J B Weld.

If you have to damage anything to get it off try to limit the damage to the cover and not the engine cases, the covers are easy to find.

In addition to misused glues and sealers, it's also distressingly common for people to leave the spring out...

If you were the last one in here, then never mind.

My bike was positively bathed in some brittle nasty gray "sealer" crap by the PO. That stupid SOB pretty much glued every fastener and cover in place with that junk, leading to much, much sweariness on my part later on.

YYYYEEEEEEAAAAA!!!!!!! Following the suggestion of using the WD40, waiting and then tapping....the cover finally began to let go and urika...the oil began to slowly drain, then once it stopped draining so much I was able to grab the cover and gently work it off the bike......no damage to anything...not even the nutz! I am so proud of myself...because I usually end up trying to strong arm things and causing more damage.....so this is an accomplishment for me! I did notice that the oil had a slight gasoline smell to it....and from what I am guessing I bet it was the original factory oil and filter....seeing that the bike only has 4,000 original miles on it, I tend to bet the PO never changed anything on the bike......it hasn't been on the road since 1984 according to the state inspection sticker that it was sporting when I got it......but it was ridden up until about 2 years ago......anyway....I am hoping that once I get to fire this puppy up....she doesn't smoke or anything like that....I did hear it run briefly before I purchased it, he used starting fluid, shot it in the carbs and fired it up....started right up and ran until the fluid was all gone....didn't see any smoke then.....

Oh well....there I go rambling again.......

Thanx again for all the input....you guys are the BEST!!!! Glad to have each of you on my team......!!!!:clap::clap::clap::clap::clap::clap::clap:

Anita

(I sure love these little smiley guys!)

Excellent!!
Now go easy on those nuts when you put it back together, they strip easily!

I went very slow when I put the nutz back on and I used a 1/4 drive ratchet as not to apply too much torque.....snugged them up a little better than hand tight and that was about it.....I haven't put the torque wrench to them yet....got plenty of time as the bike isn't ready to be started just yet......

Thanx so much for the support....again you guys are helping me to get my bike back on the road......

Anita
