A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Every time i go to a local junk yard makes me sick to my stomach. I tried to buy this bike A year and a half ago, it was really nice when it showed up now it getting messed up

ant

The story i keep getting is the owner of the yard is going to do something with it ! WTF

Any possibility of contact with the owner directly..in person or other means.I assume you do want ownership of this GS

Ant...funny you should post that. I was just up to Killeen Power Sports to talk to my buddy Paul and we shot the chit for a while at his work bench.

This years project bike they are doing for The Harvest Classic is a 76 RE5. Paul set up the Motion Pro gravity bottle and fired her up for me. First time i ever heard one run..sounds like a 4 stroke at idle but kinda like a 4 stroke / 2 stroke high bred at higher RPMs. Really a unique sound for sure.

Walk in with a wad of cash and ask to speak with the owner.

How much is it worth now ? What do I spend on it ? it was clean as hell 18 months ago I really wanted it then

They aren't worth much in that condition, by the time you restored it you would be way upside down on it!!!!

Excellent$5535 Very Good$3410 Good$1980 Fair$1125 PoorN/A

I would say that FAIR is a reasonable condition assessment. Mind you that the carb has something like 15 jets and diaphrams..so thats gonna be a BIITCH to get it right. Also the OEM plugs are NLA. A place called ROTARY RECYCLE is a guy that has hundreds of them and he may well be able to get SOME parts and provide lots of technical support.

There are adapters put there that allow you to use a standard B8ES plug in them.

Ant...heres a sample few OEM plugs that SOMETIMES pop up on Ebay...che3ck the prices for these!!!

Looks like if i can pick the bike up for a hundred dollars I can make money just on the plugs ! thanks chuck

I got to talk with the owner of the yards son, "he said the bike was in impound as a stolen recovery and the owner did not want it back now they are looking into what they want for it" It has 7 thousand miles on it.. what should i spend up to ? and still be safe !

depends on what they come up with..I would counter with maybe 5 or 6 hundy. Its probably a runnable bike, but its gonna need a few G worth of work to get it back to real nice shape.

Be sure they can provide you with ALL yhe paperwork you will need to not get shanked with a STILL STOLEN BIKE. I would suggest a letter from the real owner with something stating he doesnt wish for it back.

I am not sure on what NY laws are regarding a stolen vehicle and someone else ( salvage yard ) trying to sell it. Local cop can probably provide you with contact info to the PO. Or at least a police report on it ??

Found this old photo the other day - bunch of hooligans being taught how to break RE5s.

Are you one of them???

That's just before I started Chuck. The guy with the muttons, 5th from the left, was to become my chief mechanic and sidecar pilot (John) and the other guys all worked in shops within 20 or so miles. All great lads and as mad as hatters.

None of those shops are still going - bloody shame, those were great days.

I am thinking a couple hundred for the bike and it would be another to the collection !
