Aurora, Colorado, USA Mayor Mike Coffman wanted to understand homelessness.
So he did something most politicians would never do.
He started spending his Friday nights at the city’s homeless shelter.
Not for a photo.
Not for a speech.
Not for a quick visit with cameras.
He checks in.
Sleeps on a basic cot in the men’s dorm.
Talks with residents.
Wakes up the next morning.
Then helps serve breakfast.
His reason was simple.
He wanted to see the system from the inside.
Not from a report.
Not from a meeting room.
Not from behind a desk.
But from the same place the people living through it experience it.
And what he found changed him.
He said homelessness is far more complex than many people realize.
