Anyone have one or any viable info on the machine I should know. I found a couple that look like a good replacement for the old GS 1000g.

Pretty much a standard big S/T bike, with all that implies. Big, heavy, stable, comfortable, good luggage. Strong motor. Solid in fast sweepers, a bit of a handful in tight stuff. Good weather protection, but hot in warm weather. If that's what you're looking for you'll be happy with it.

I believe one of the distinguished members had one. Mr. Joe Nardy. PM him, maybe he'll make an appearance and enlighten us with his wisdom.....

I have two friends who swapped their FZ1s for FJRs. They absolutely love them. One of these guys put 70,000 miles on the first and is now on a newer one.

A lot of guys on Honda ST site that have worn out their ST1100s have gone for the FJR rather than the ST1300. That says a lot right there I think.

i hate 'em. they look like a scooter. but... i've ridden with guys that have them and they rode miles and weren't afraid to head up into the hills and ride dirt roads all day. but... they smoked dirt weed.

Lol...That's exactly what I think! I would go even further and say the Connie and the ST look like over grown Bergman's too. So much plastic...big bar risers and you can't see the front wheel when riding. Maybe when I'm 70 I will see these bikes as attractive...only problem then, of course, is that I won't be able to lift them. Lol...I'm sure I'll get heat for this.:p

Jim
I tried the ST, FJR and Concours and I felt the Connie was the best. The FJR is a great machine but was told to stay away from the first generation for it made an undesirable vibration at highway speeds. I went the "super" Sport Touring route for I was racking so many miles and use my bike everyday. The luggage is greatly useful(load a small carts worth of groceries for the store). My dislikes of the FJR was the power and lack of 6th gear(or OD). The Connie also has VVT which helps tremendously in the torque department. However the FJR is an awesome machine, just my nod goes to the big Connie.

I'm not 70, hell I'm not even half that age but can say I love the look and styling of the bike especially when I run it with screen down and bags off... The big fairing comes in handy for cold weather. Weight isn't too big of a problem for me... Out of all the bikes I've had I receive the most compliments and intrigue from it. Most BMW guys like it (not sure why Trev doesn't ;) ) and are impressed by build quality. I get compliments from all ages on it...

Should have taken the Connie for a spin when you were over last. Smooth, quiet, powerful... The new FJR is comparable and it all boils down to personal preference. If your all about power adders the Connie is also better bet for it has the ZX14 engine which offers lots of aftermarket goodies for the ZX14 that are bolt on. You'll never get crazy fast with it but I've seen some builds with a respectable 160 whp and 105ftlBS torque curve that as flat as can be.

You'll love a supe sport tourer it being and FJR or C14. It's like the Cadillac CTS of the bike world. Comfy, great for touring and faster than it should be.
my 2 cents

mr. jedz' concourse is a sweet ride. i've seen it rip turns with a load of groceries and beer. it looks great too.

Lol! I agree with you Jedz. I think Trevor prefers the dogs hind leg that is on his front end! (Or is it the lady leg lamp that the dad won in A Christmas Story?):p;)
Lol... I like to think about the leg lamp while riding it. :)

The dealer down the end of the road has both the FJR and a Connie, 04 FJ and a 08 Connie, both are priced for fall clearance . I hope to find time tomorrow to go and take them both out for comparison purposes. Both have higher miles but very clean( both just over 60K .) They are asking 3k for the FJ and $5200. For the Connie

Dealer overpriced for high mileage bikes?

Same Connie with fraction of the miles and could probably had for even less.

NOTE: I just notcied it's not running.

Better deal on an FJR?

Jim they didn't release the Gen 2 FJR till 2006. That's the bike you want and the one I can strongly recommend. The Gen1's are good bikes but I hear the vibration at highway speeds is an unacceptable problem for a touring machine. I also know the valve seals are more prone to premature failure and can cause smoking and oil consumption issues. 60K is pretty high for a gen1 FJR and I would hesitate greatly on spending the $$$ on one. To get into the ST realm on a younger machine (miles) and year I'd budget at least $6K. Also the Gen1 FJR is not a GEN2 FJR. It would be like riding a ZX-14 to see what Connie 14 felt like ( I know not the best comparison). Just two different bikes based on similar platforms.

Like I said Stay away from the Gen 1 FJR, if your looking for a well sorted tourer wait and nab a Gen 2 FJR or a C14.

As for the Connie if the K-PASS system is compromised look to spend $thousands$ I know Fobs are near $500 each before programming in which you need all legal paper work to get sorted at a certified Kawasaki dealer. If the K-PASS system it's self is compromised look to spend thosee big bucks for it's tied into the ECU system (and ABS if equipped) and put the bike's electrical system into lock down and costs a fortune for the dealer to get it sorted... You could only spend $500 but likely look to spend more.. K-PASS on board diagnostics is the LCD display and if that's unresponsive your looking at replacing all those components to get it to work. The usual issue is if someone tries to jump the bike off a running car... It frys the K-PASS and your F'd... It's in the users manual to only start the bike off a fully charged battery.

I don't think it's exactly on the level to state categorically that the Gen 1 FJR is lemon-like. It's not. As I said, I have friends who have ridden them, and the one who put 70K on one did it on an '03-and that bike is still running very well (we still see the bike at bike nights). Neither of the guys I know who have them have had a single hiccup or reliability issue. In 2011, Cycle World listed the Gen 1 FJR as a number one used bike buy.
