Too rich with pod filters???

I just put 4 individual K&N pod filters on my 82 gs650g. The idle shot way up so I turned it down to 1100 when warm. Right off idle the bike runs pretty good but at 1/4 throttle and up it just bogs down especially going up hill. Im getting no popping or barking and it idles great and revs freely in nuetral. The plug color tells me its way too rich but I would think it would be lean after adding the pods??? It really feels like its way too rich so I went to adjust the pilot screws but mine appear to be filled in. Do I need to drill them out? Does this sound like the best adjustment to make? The pods are the only thing not stock on the bike.
I tried a search but couldnt find my particular problem.

adding pods to any stock carb will cause you to run dangerously lean, stop riding until you get a jet kit please. just because you dont hear popping does'nt mean your not lean.

With an 82 you should have the CV style carbs, the caps over the air pilot screws is for EPA purposes, you can usually take a self tapping sheet metal screw and screw it into them and then just grab the screw with a pair of pliers and pull it out, just don't screw down to deep. You say your pulgs look rich? Normally when you add pods it will lean it out, and you will have to install a jet kit.

Those are symptoms of lean running. Installing pods will make your bike run a *lot* leaner. These carbs are extremely sensitive to changes in the intake. You can damage the engine if you run it like that for very long.

I put pods on my 550 and had the same problems. I went back to the stock airbox because I wanted to spend this summer riding my bike not messing with the carbs. I'm told a good starting point for rejetting is to raise the needles two notches and go up three or four sizes on the main jets. It will probably take a lot of trial and error jetting changes to get it right though.

Are the plugs black? Usually they're bone white when the jetting is that lean.

good luck,
Debby

The plugs were very black, but I didnt check them before the pods and I only took the bike about a block with the pods on.

no mater what you have done , black plugs either mean too much gas or oil fouled. Get someone with ecperience to look at them This is a good lesson for anyone who just installs things and never looks at the plugs first. Especially after being told to do so many times by a few diferent people. there is no such thing as a bolt on engine mod. Mayby a chrome air filter

I know a thing or two about reading plugs, and mine are not oil fouled. I have rebuilt a few bikes and can tune my own carbs, Im not too worried about re jetting if needed. I just thought it seemed strange that the bike appeared to be running rich after putting on pods. I thought maybe due to the smaller area of standing air from the pods compared to the giant two stage airbox there may be a chance that the bike is running rich. Your right about checking the plugs first, but this bike has been sitting for a few years and I just got the hundreds of spiders cleaned out of it and forgot the take a look at my plugs. I just wanted to know if it had given anyone else a too rich condition.

before going hog wild on fixes try a couple of tanks of gas treatment which may loosen up some crud that may be causing the problem.

After another run up and down the street the plugs are starting to whiten up and the feel Im getting now is more of a lean condition. It runs good at idle and very little throttle but when you open the throttle it starves for fuel. I opened up the carbs and they will need a cleaning, My needles dont have adjustable clips so I will shim them (I have done this on a few bikes) but I dont think that will help much. Next I will try the pilot screws if that does not get me rich enough I will get a jet kit. What is the favorite kit for most folks? (sorry I didnt search this one)
Thanks,
Bill

How do you shim the needle? I'm having a similar problem. Thanks

You need to take the needle out of the slide and replace the plastic spacer with washers that let the end of the needle stick out more. I'm talking about the end of the needle that sticks out of the end of the plastic spacer. The more needle showing the richer the needle circuit becomes.

On the other hand, ... if he has a bike with VM carbs, all he has to to is move the clip.

But, ... since he hasn't told us, we just have to guess. :o

Oops! Sorry guys, its my first post! I guess a lil info would help. I have the CV type. its an '82 gs650g. Today I figured out the needle shim deal. Before I changed anything, I looked at the sparkplugs and they were a soot black. in the manual, it most likely is carbon fouling. All of them appeared that way. I have pods and a 4-1 mac exhaust. I did notice that once I shimmed the needle, it ran a little better at full throttle, but still does the hesitation from about half to full throttle open. I haven't set any air screws or anything. I rebuilt the entire top end, new p-rings, completely rebuilt and sync'ed carbs with a mercury manometer. I made sure everything was torqued and valve shims checked to spec, and still kinda get a clunking sound from the valves.
Thoughts?

on GS four cylinder CV carbs you can not get them close to correct with out a st.3 jet kit.
the factory needles are the wrong shape when removing the air box.
is your using emgo chrome cone filters...that will cause problems also as they are to restrictive and small in volume.
the problem area will be between 4k until it goes on the main jet.
there may be someone here that can get you better than you are but...
if a jet kits available...its money well spent.

Thanks Blowerbike! You described my problem to a T! That's what I was assuming the next step would be. Do you suggest that I go with the K&N filters rather than the Emgo? Also, I noticed that I have the normal heat discoloration to 3 of the 4 exhaust pipes...The one (far right side of bike) isn't really discolored at all! I also noticed that the vent tube between carbs 3 and 4 had oil coming out??? Got any suggestions as to why? The other vent tube is fine! I was thinking maybe carb 4 isn't getting fuel to the cylinder, but I'm not sure...I just dont understand the oil coming out of the vent tube!

Thanks BassCliff! I used your carb build notes about 10 months ago! Very helpful! I will def check out the links and learn a thing or 2! Thanks again!

K&N look a likes are nice filters for the money(APE) and half or more less than K&N's.(do not oil these/these are not washable).
oil out the vent is probably oil level to high or the level is to high because of gas leaking from the carbs into the crank case.
the oil level should be in the middle of the glass while the bike is held in an up right position.(not on center stand).

Just received my dynojet stage 3 kit. I went to dynojet's website and they have instructions for almost all other bikes except for my gs650! Just curious if anyone has the specific info as far as the jets and where to start with the calibration. All the instructions seem pretty general, so I'll just use that and go from there. I'm sure I will figure it out regardless, just wanted to make sure there arent any quirks, besides NOT SMOKING, to getting this installed!
