    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Hi,

Need to do an oil change; I have lots of car 10w 40w oil but worried that is may effect the clutch plates.


Whats the cheapest 10w 40w motorbike oil I can get in the uk?

Or should I not be worried?

Long as it doesnt have friction modifiers its fine. There are also good synthetic cycle oils out there. Myself, I use Shell Rotella 10 W 40 diesel oil.
 
Oil in the UK is different than we get in the USA. In the states the government has mandated reductions in the amount of zinc and phosphorus in the oil, important high pressure additives, because they shorten catalytic converter life. In the UK the reductions haven't been as great. Hopefully some UK members will chime in with their recommendations. In the USA using diesel engine oil works well in motorcycles so that's what a lot of us GS riders do.

In 1998 the Japanese Automotive Standards Organization (or JASO for short) developed a grading system for motorcycle oils.
JASO MA ? This was the standard for single unit engines where the wet clutch, gearbox and engine used the same oil. JASO-MA oils don?t contain friction modifiers.
JASO-MA2 ? This specification was introduced in 2006 for modern motorcycle engines. As well as being a higher standard of oil the JASO-MA2 approval means the oil is suitable for use in bikes with catalytic converts in the exhaust system.
The Jaso grading system measured (amongst other things) an oils ability to resist clutch friction (or slippage), protection offered against engine wear and pitting in the gear box.

so, look for that first on the bottle.
oh and here's something to chew on so you can get up to speed in a discussion of "the best motorcycle oil that you can buy that isn't found in a motorcycle shop"

You cannot get shell rotella in the uk. Shell recommends Advance 4T AX7 10W-40 (SM/MA2) (a)
car lube do a decent 10-40 straight mineral oil for around ?15-17 for 4.5 litres [FONT=Lato_Regular]Specifications: API SL/CF, ACEA A2/B2.
i used it for running in new piston rings.
normally I use silcolene super 4. 10-40. Bit pricy though

maybe some of the oil experts would look at the specs for shell helix it does say for diesel although their page says

what JASO SG+ Actually means I cannot find out. I am not Recommending this just something to look at and perhaps discuss

I have been using Halfords own motorcycle oil with no problems at all and at ?25 for 5lt not to spendy either.
 
Castrol GTX for diesels is my recommendation. Price is often all over the place but look around and you'll be able to get a can for under ?20.
 
Euro car parts mineral 15/40 diesel oil there own brand QX works for me, around ?20 for 5 litre.

15W40 diesel oil is what I use. Mineral is ok imho, we are changing every couple thousand miles.
Last one I got was 'special formula for 80's diesels'.

Another vote for the ECP branded QX. There is always a promo on so make use of that and even cheaper is Carpartsforless, which is ECP web only part and costs even less spendlessness.
