what did you wrench on today??

Just found my dream bike today!

Just found my dream bike today!

Well, this has turned into a real surreal day for me. Big ice storm in Dallas today, everything closed, got to stay home from work and goof off. My work blocked Craigslist about 2 years ago, so my searching for bikes has been limited to evenings and weekends, which is probably a blessing in disguise, because if I spent ANY more time on Craigslist, I would have to find a storage facility, I have too many bikes as it is! Anyway, I have been watching Craigslist really closely for the past week or so, sold another big Magna last week so had some extra cash burning a hole in my pocket, just waiting for another good deal. So I'm sitting here on the computer today and around noon, what pops up? A 1979 Honda CBX! I have been looking for one of these FOREVER, and this one looked decent and the price was reasonable, thank God the guy had his phone number in the ad and I was the first person to call him! We talked about the bike for about 20 minutes or so, it was owned by a gentlemen that was the original owner who bought he bike off the showroom floor in 1980 at the at of 18. It was his first and only street bike, he loved the bike and road it for about 20 years, before dying of cancer in 2002. The bike sat in his parents garage ever since, and his father passed away few years ago, leaving his 82 year old mother as the last person with an emotional attachment to the bike. Well, now she's in failing health and just decided it was time to let it go and allow somebody else enjoy to it. I got to meet her and she was still smart as a whip, but confined to a wheelchair and also diagnosed with liver cancer, so her days are numbered also. She told me several stories about her son and how much he loved that bike, treated it like a baby, always took good care of it, it was his pride and joy. She really hated to see it go, but wanted to have some control over who was going to get it, and she wanted to see it restored and enjoyed by somebody, not just turned for profit by one of these vulture bike shops around here. This bike is a KEEPER, I have been looking for a 79 CBX for YEARS, but they are few and far between in this price range, so the motorcycle Gods were watching down on me today, because now the bike is MINE! She had asked her neighbor to put the bike on Craigslist, and after he got off the phone with me, he said his phone was ringing off the hook for about 30 minutes, he called me after I was already out the door and asked me if I was 100% sure I wanted the bike, and I was like, dude, I'm already on the way, will be there in an hour! Well, the roads were SO BAD today, it took me 3 hours to get there, he was about 75 miles away! He told me that several people had offered him quite a bit more for it after we had made our deal, but he stuck to his word and waited for me to get there. I must have seen 15-20 cars crashed on the way over there, and 2 jack knifed 18 wheelers, the roads were AWFUL, I must have went 20-35 mph on the highway almost he entire way over there. Anyway, I get there, meet the old woman, talk for a spell, look over the bike, give him the money and he hands me the title. Then, just for some icing on the cake, he says, Oh, by the way. Here are some extra parts I found in the garage, I'm sure you can use them. He hands me two old Honda boxes, with get this. A BRAND NEW NOS Speedo and a BRAND NEW NOS tachometer! I almost shiite my drawers! I haven't been following CBX prices on eBay much lately, but it's safe to say he just handed me a thousand dollars worth of parts! I'm going to go back and pick up the bike on Saturday, it's not supposed to thaw out until then. This has been just an unreal day for me, perfect timing, just dumb luck really, right place at the right time, and now I'm the proud owner of my ultimate dream bike, a 1979 Honda CBX! WOO HOO! LIFE IS GOOD! Here's the first round of pics, this puppy will probably take a few months to restore, but I'm going to bring her back to her original glory and this one will be in my collection until the day I die, gauranteed!

AWESOME!!!!!

Sometimes, things just work out. The bike is beautiful, no doubt but I always have to ask: What is it about the 1979 CBX OTHER THAN sheer good looks and speed? :D ;)

I saw that thing on there it was gone before I had a chance to call....so how much?

Lucky!
A CBX is one of those Holy Grails of bikes. I can't believe there is still honor on Craiglist. If it was me, I'd have got there to have the seller say "Well, this other guy showed up and..."

I Saw these on another forum and brought them over here for you. Note the big turbo pipe on the single headlight bike.

Listed for $2500 and that's exactly what I paid for it, jwhelan can testify to that, he saw it...........briefly! :D

Fitted the freshly braced swingarm to the bike and put on the front forks and wheels again to give it a feel.

A great story.
> You bought your dream bike.
> Mom gets to know that her son's bike will be treasured for decades to come
> She held to the original price.

There is still honor in the world. I had a similar experience of a seller holding to a price when higher offers were coming in. Not a dream bike, a 1995 Mazda Protege. Advertised for $1100, which was in the Kelly Blue Book range for that model and mileage. I was the first caller, and had to drive 40 miles to see it. While I was checking it out, the guy was taking calls, some offering more money for it, site unseen. After the test drive, I told him I'd buy it, but needed to go back to get the cash, and get my sister to drive me over. So that was another 2 hours. But he held to his price despite higher offers.

And one final thing: Good luck seems to strike the prepared man. And you were prepared.

I'm always prepared! I have a couple grand "slush fund" always sitting around the house, just for times like these. I can tell you story after story about bike deals like this that ONLY HAPPENED, because I had the money on hand and the trailer hooked up and GONE in 5 minutes! Gotta be Johnny on the spot to get the great deals on Craigslist, that's for sure! :D

Bought a Z1000Mk.II with only a couple of owners and low miles the same way. Was on the phone the second it came up and in the car a few minutes after.

Problem: it was a 8 hour drive - one way. :D

Managed to get it home safe though.

By the way: great story. Thanks for sharing it. :)

Awesome, thanks for posting. A stock CBX is a visual treat as it is, but these upgraded versions are really cool.....the turbo-ed one probably goes like hell, but lots of nice mods on the other one....single-side swing arm & what looks like a NR750-style tail.:cool:

What did I wrench on today ... ?

<heavy sigh>
snowthrower ..... snowthrower, again.

put on an electric starter motor...

Welding Booth

Welding Booth

Its not a bike but its something for the bike later. Last night i put together a welding booth for my new little welder. And I laid down my first welds last night. Had to weld something together so I welded a nail to my learning plate.

my booth with helmet for size comparison.

home made vent system worked like a charm.

here is my little DC Arc Welder from HF.

and here is my welds as pitiful as they are.

But that is what i did last night.

I only wish I had a snow blower.... All I gots is the old shovel.

Redneck, I like the exhaust system!

Turn up the heat a little and keep practicing on the welds.
You'll get it in no time. ;)

I'm trying to remove the tire from the rear wheel. The clamps that made a fast job of removing the front tire from the wheel won't touch the rear tire. I eventually cut the tread off with a utility knife. The rubber is very hard, and almost acts as if it were epoxied to the wheel.

So I made a device to try to push the bead off with bolts. Two pieces of wood, 1x3x6" on either side of the tire, connects by 6" x 1/4" bolts. Using another bolt through one of the wood pieces to press against the sidewall remnant, just above the bead. The bead moves, but the bolt penetrates the rubber first! Next step is to find something to spread the force out, between the bolt and the rubber, to prevent puncture. Photos will eventually follow.

This is one where I would have been smart to pay a shop to do it with professional equipment.
