I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

so, when i got my 79 gs 550e last july, it came with rebuilt carbs, all tuned up ready to ride, less than 8,000 miles.... bought for 700$ and i paid for carb rebuild kits and beer while he taught me how to do simple stuff like change the oil, replace battery, remove ignition cylinder to go get a new key cut, etc....with the help of this site, ive taught myself how to fix a few other problems too so lets tackle a new one......had I known installing pod filters would screw up so much, i would have never let him do it, but none the less, i've got after market pods, and i think the baffels in the exhaust have been tampered with due to the fact that at 5500 rpm i can set off a bunch of car alarms ( which i think is funny to be honest) when i got the bike it would fall on its face at almost 6k rpm but i could run through 1-6 gears with no problem. i think i've read almost all threads about pods and jetting so i pulled the carbs, and replaced the 92.5 stock jets with 110's.....what a difference! pulls right to the redline and was like riding a totally different bike....Now heres the next issue....when shifting to 4th gear while giving it half to full throttle it seems to bog down a bit at around 5k rpm...if i wind the throttle up slowly i can continue on to 5th gear, but it 5th it does the same thing. did i go up enough on the jets or is it a different problem? any suggestions appreciated!

You changed the jets without changing your needles and drilling out the slide for it?

If you answer yes, you have also mostlikely answered your question.

With pods its give and take, and unless you suck up money for the jet kit, you'll have to adjust your throttle rolling to compensate.

BTW, my buddy i bought the bike from is a moto nut and was finishing his mechanical engineering degree at Ohio state and finished the gs just in time for me before he moved up north for his first big job, so i don't have his ear to bend anymore.......

He's got VM carbs, you don't drill the slide

Raise your needle one notch

Then do plug chops and see how they look

Even easier, put the air box back on!

thanks ranger, you are correct, just changed the jets....so looks like i either need to find a jet kit with different needles, or start combing ebay for a stock airbox and boots which at this point i would give my "eye teeth" for. had i known a year ago, i wouldn't have agreed to letting him do it...is dyno jet the only company out there or is there others?

You don't need a jet kit = you already have adjustable needles

Try the Parts for Sale forum if you want to find an air box

man, now i am confused....the frame says 79 gs550e, but the side covers say 550L...i ordered 4 jets for the vm from jets r us and when i took the bowls off, the jets were different...ran up to iron pony with one of the jets out of the carbs and they fixed me right up.....i always assumed it was an L model, until last weekend?

Now I'm confused.. I went off the looks of your carbs, if in fact they are 32's do what I said, if not do what Big T said. One of us is right.

Take off the top cover, pull out the needle and look if it has slots for the clip ontop (inside) to adjust the needle height. They do however, closer up look to be 32's but just do that anyways to eliminate guess work.

Hi Mr. big matt,

Here's your picture:

Those are VM carbs.

Thank you for your indulgence,

Definately VM carbs

How about some pics of the bike?

BTW, in Photobucket - click on the photo and a box with 4 choices pops up

Go down to the IMG code (bottom one) and click on the code. It should blink "copied"

Now, go to the forum and left click and paste the photo into your reply

Hi,

Pasting the code into your post will work but you won't see the picture until you click either Submit or Preview. (Or maybe it's just my browser.)

I like to see my pictures as I'm writing my post so I click on the [IMG]http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum/images/editor/insertimage.gif icon and paste the URL. But that's just me. It works either way.

Thank you for your indulgence,

Looks like a 79 550 L to me

Yes, the VM carbs have adjustable needles. You have to disassemble the top of all 4 carbs to get them out. Move the clip one notch down on each needle, reassemble and see if that flat spot doesn't disappear

You can also open up the pilot fuel screw another 1/4 turn and see if that helps too. If that doesn't help, try moving up one size on the pilot jet.
