    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Wheel assembly question

This is what they call a Damn Good Question... meaning I have no idea.

I wonder if it's there more as a damper for the driven spline, to keep it from knocking against the wheel hub under load?

It doesn't make a lot of sense as a seal to keep water out and/or spline grease in.


Sorry, I'm not gonna go out in the garage and take my bike apart to ponder this...

The 650G wheel I have on hand doesn't have it either. The parts fiche for every "G" model 450 on up tp 1100 shows that O-ring.
I'm not gonna stress about it. Just weird...
 
Not so much a damper, more a flexible spacer. I read it as limiting movement of the drive on the spline. Usually they disappear once broken - and if you don't read the parts diagram you don't know it was ever there.

Yah, that's probably a better way to put it.
 
I wondered exactly where that O-ring would live in here and this spot in red makes the most sense. Kinda surprised there's no recess like the spot marked in blue. I wonder if I could source one locally to avoid shipping delays just to have it in there. OTOH, there's no sign of wear from steel to aluminum metal on metal there. Too much time has passed waiting for warmer temperature in the garage and I'm over thinking this. LOL

I'm torn on which joint to install. The black one is supposed to be harder, longer lasting, but shows some slight notches starting on the splines. The gold ones are known for their short life, but this one shows no signs of wear. I inspect and lube the spline with Honda M 77 Moly paste every 8-10k miles. Maybe I'll just run the gold till the next oil change and see how it looks.
 
I've read the last part of Suzuki part #, for bolts, the size is in that # if you know how to read it. bolt ending in 08307 is 08mm X 30mm long, and 7 is strength. If "O" rings are like that, you could find the size then probably see where it should fit. Wondering if the "O" rings may be like the bolts?

Why not, with that inspection interval you will notice wear long before it becomes an issue.
 
The part number for this O-Ring of Mystery is 09280-65003. In Suzuki's part numbering system, this indicates an ID of 65mm. No idea what thickness it is, or the material. 09280 simply indicates "o-ring".

Might that 65mm dimension help you narrow down exactly where it sits?



As to the spline color, it's really difficult to tell the difference between the gold and the newer silver spline units unless they're side-by-side. If that's the original that came with your 1983, it might have been replaced under warranty or a recall before it went very far; Suzuki did release a kit back in the day.

In any case, if it really is not showing any wear, it'll work fine for a while. The soft '82+ splines generally stripped out somewhere in the 15,000 - 25,000 mile range. If you don't see any wear it should make it to the next tire change no problem.
 
Couple of years ago I bought a virtually unused drive plate. The feeling of it slipping onto the hub splines was remarkable - lovely sliding fit, almost unworn.
This, in turn, reassured me of the state of the hub splines - they must be similarly nearly unworn, which is remarkable for 300K miles.
Allowing for tolerances in the above, it's still good.

Cipher, Guessing the D = thickness or cross section? did you get the 2.1 from that part #?...I can see 65= ID but don't see 003 being 2.1. Just wondering.
