Wolo Bad Boy Horn: Holy CRAP this thing is loud!

This Saturday, my good friend Al bought a Wolo Bad Boy horn from Harbor Freight. I believe it was $45, although they put these on sale once in a while.

The horn comes with a relay and good instructions. With a bit of fiddling and a small custom bracket, I had the horn neatly mounted up under the steering stem on his GS850GL. Some wire, solder, shrink tubing, and bad-a-bing, we had it wired through the relay.

Key on. The button. I pressed it.

How to describe the unholy racket that erupted? I'm at a loss. An almighty parp to make one's bladder quiver and weaken, even if you're expecting it. At first, you don't think it's all that bad, but then you realize your ears are ringing, and your hearing has simply shut down for a bit. The world gradually emerges from silence after a few seconds. If there is a Brown Note, this is pretty close.

I've seen Ted Nugent in concert from six rows back, watched four Harrier jump jets make synchronized vertical landings 100 feet away, and spent 12 years in a busy rock band. I don't think I've ever heard anything quite this loud.

Giggling like loons, we triggered the Voice of Doom a few more times before securing the wiring neatly and buttoning up. The horn is a hit with Al's boys, although his wife dubbed it "ridiculous". Which is perfect, because "ridiculous" is EXACTLY the effect we were looking for.

If you're looking for a horn to alert the nodders six lanes over, this is it. However, it is a bit bulky and draws a LOT of current (the instructions call for a 20 amp fuse and 16 gauge wire).

Al should have lots of fun with this thing... I'm gonna wait until they go on sale, but I think I need one too.

Those WoLo Bad Boy horns are pretty much Stebel Nautilus horns, rebadged I think....they are identical. And at 139 db, extremely loud. As I posted previously, I foolishly tested the Nautilus horn in the garage with a battery, the day it arrived:eek:....big mistake!:)
C.A.S. used to carry the Stebel version for $35.00, IIRC.

Tony.

Here's mine! Lost the helmet lock but it's out of the airflow to the engine.:D

I installed one on my bike this morning. The mounting point on the horn is pretty weak. The first time I tried to tighten the bolt, the mounting ears snapped off. Sent the horn back to Wolo and they replaced it ..no questions. Installation was straightforward and the horn is LOUD.

I put the Stebel Nautilus on my Concours and it looks just like the WOLO
139db and wicked loud. I drive around just looking for people to scare.
Ought to work great the first real time I need it:D

Hey Doug,
I've been thinking about buying a concours. What is your opinion of the bike? I really like the way they look.

Brian,

The WOLO's DO go on sale every few months at Harbor Freight, AND when I bought mine a few weeks ago I ALSO used a "15% off any single item" coupon that allowed me to get out the door on this bad boy "pardon the pun" for less than $33!!! tested it off a spare battery and agree with you - that sucker is LOUD!

I'll be mounting it in the next week or so, when I'll also do the coil relay mod.

Regards,

Bad A$$ horn!

Bad A$$ horn!

I also purchased a Wolo Bad-boy horn from Harborfreight. I wanted a horn that would make cagers loose control of their faculties, is just what I got! Still gotta mount it, after the carb cleaning. Jus finished the valve adjustment.

My opinion:-k
Well, let's see
They basically took a great 16 valve motor, oil and water cooled it, threw in a 6-speed tranny and shaft drive.Added a sweet full fairing and hard bags and you have the Connie.
I always loved them and wanted one from way back in '86 when they first came out.Bought my 2000 with 32000 on it and have put almost 6000 trouble free miles on it.
Smooth ride, roomy,7.5 gallon gas tank, fairing does a great job on protection, pack mule for capacity of stuff carried.
Overall a fine machine. Has one of the longest runs,20 years,in the motorcycle field. Great website for fans,http://forum.concours.org/
So in a nutshell, what can I say....I am smitten with my Connie.
It is almost like an evolution of my GS1100E with a shaft.
Here's a picture of mine

Sorry for the thread hijack.

OK I just ordered one from Amazon; used but with Amazon prime (free shipping) and tax came in at $24.45

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER#productDetails
I plan to mount it on my left hand fairing mount. I have two GS1150 horns mounted there at the moment as I have a steering stabilizer on the right hand side.

Should look something like in the attached pic.

It is supposed to pull 18 amps so I'll wire it from the battery with an inline fuse and relay rather than go through the SSPB. I will probably test it though to see what happens.

I got one for the V-Strom just trying to find a good place to mount it :)

I want two horns. One for tooting at the lady's. One for GET THE HECK OUT OF MY WAY A-HOLE!

I think this is the right way, two horns. The Wolo Bad Boy is great for making car drivers scatter, the problem is you don't know in which direction they will be scattering. You know they will move quickly, you know they will move far, you just don't know where they will move to? Better to do you evading first and then hit the button as punishment, or perhaps as entertainment.

You can't do the polite little beep I'm here thing at all with it.

Have not hooked it up yet (and I have been forewarned about testing in an enclosed space) but the fit looks pretty good considering the size. Despite what it might look like it does not stick out any further than the engine and actually kinda looks like it belongs there.

Mounted on the ED/ESD fairing mount lugs. Just clears the tank and the oil cooler, but the open part of the hon points down which is probably good. Will run some black wires off the end from the included relay. Just needed a 3/8" or so 8mm allen head bolt

Might be a little close to the engine but it is fully exposed to the air stream.

A literal blast from the past!

A literal blast from the past!

Very strange to see one of my old posts from so long ago resurrected! :D

An update:
- I installed one of these on my GS850G not too long after the above. It's still working fine.
- I've installed two or three more on other people's bikes.
- My V-Strom came with one -- there's a way to mount them under the fairing with a grounding clamp in just the right position.

I have learned that if your Wolo/Stebel seems to be losing it's head-rattling power, you can fix it thusly:

1) Remove the plastic horn assembly from the compressor/motor assembly. It's a simple clip arrangement, but be careful with the plastic.

2) Put a few drops of air compressor oil into the "intake". Put a rag over the outlet and operate the compressor. Marvel at the black gunk that comes out. Repeat the oil and rag routine several times until the oil comes out clean-ish.

Also, the relay that comes in the package isn't exactly the greatest. If your horn is getting weak or intermittent, try replacing the relay. Good sealed 40 amp relays are only about $5 at Advance Auto or your favorite automotive shoppe.

Thanks, I'll try to remember where you left these instructions once I need them. :o

You can separate the horn from the compressor and run a hose between the two.
Gives more mounting options in tight spaces.
I have the compressor mounted under the seat, and the horn inside the fairing with the bell sticking out just below the fairing on my 1150.

How long does it take for the Wolo to spin up and make serious noise? Someone on another forum (can't remember who or where) had an air horn in parallel with a regular horn. A short jab of the horn button gives a toot for little old ladies and holding the button unleashes the 138dB "You're about to get run over by a truck" blast.

That would make sense, I will have to test it. But in addition if you separate the compressor from the horn it also must delay the horn. If you use an accumulator surely much more. Not sure I want to seep rate mine as it seems to fit well where it is.
