    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

WTF? speedo gear drive twisted, cable snaped...

Ive head the front end completely apart while it was going thrum a rebuild, now my speedo drive gear twisted and it snaped the cable... now my question is, what did i do wrong that caused this failure? did i over-torque something? did i misspalce something? WTF? this is a bit frustrating..... :mad:
 
I had replaced mine, and I got it off of ebay and it did the same thing, after taking a closer look the diameter was different, I got the right one and did not have a problem after that.
 
well, its the original drive gear, ive head it cleaned and re-lubed. were u referring to wrong cable or wrong drive gear?
 
now comes the other question, lined up with what? is there some sort of tabs where it slides in to or something? :(
 
Yes there is a slot.
I have one for a 19" front wheel if you need one.
 
Ill check to c whats going on with my, its just strange that this happened. i thought everything was assembled correctly, but apparently i was wrong. i might as well throw in new wheel bearings, i need to get caliper rebuild kits (any sugestions for a source?) and another new cable... :cool:
 
I was out in garage working on my forks and as I assembled wheel with speedo, I realized there is nothing preventing it from spinning.

Essentially, I think you need to follow the correct assembly order to keep it from spinning. Of course you need to place speedo drive in the slots of the wheel with the arrow pointing up. Then the critical procedure; the axle is tightened first and then the two nuts on the bottom of forks are tightened around the axle. At least this is how my 1100G goes together which looks similar to the picture of your fork. Please consult the service manual for your bike for exact procedure.
 
i think i did that last step beck-wards... to the manual it is:-) and an oil change while at it:-) thank you!
 
Some bikes have the slot and some don't. I can't remember which do (I think the 750 does) but if you look at the lower LH fork you'll either see the lug or you won't
 
there is nothing on the front of the bike that would prevent the sender from rotating.... :eek::cool:
 
This will be of no help, but when I redid my forks and put the front wheel back on I was sure something was amiss about the speedo drive. I thought I remembered it fitting in an obvious way but when I reassembled everything it just didn't look right. I haven't had any problems but you're making me paranoid now.
 
lol... dont worry about it man:-) i took the wheel off today, tightness the axle nut, put it all back together, 230 miles latter, still in the same spot as i left it... but i dont have a speedo cable installed yet...
 
My 84 Katana did the same thing. But my speedo drive gave me warning - it squealed for a week. I though it was just my pads. Then, when the cable broke, I looked a little closer. Call me Mr. Prudent.
Mine (speedo drive) rotated because the worm gear inside was dry as a bone, worn, and chunks missing from the ring gear. Got a replacement, greased it up good, fit the two tabs into the slots on the wheel, tightened everything up and hey presto - I've been going since last summer.
 
installed a good cable yesterday, rode around for a bit, and it happened again today....beeeeeep..... when my wheel bearings will arrive, ill tear it apart and check again.... this is starting to be frustrating
 
what type of lubricant should be used inside the speedometer drive gear?
 
Just regular beraring grease like white lithium or ball joint grease.
