A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I like older BMWs and have desired one for some time. Much as I could say that an R/80 GS would probably be my first choice, those bikes are inaccessible-both in supply and in cost.

So, when a low mileage '98 R1100R popped up at an opportune moment, I grabbed it.

Pictures at 11.

I remember back when I started riding bikes, our local shop owner said, people that ride BMW's are different, nothing wrong with them, they just see things different than most other folks. I've watched since then & found he was correct, nothing wrong with them, but sure do see things different. Good luck & keep us updated.

I'm a bmw rider....I guess some would say I'm "different"....lol

Hope nobody took my post as negative toward BMW riders. A prime example of what I meant, a high school buddy, back when we were wanting Chevelles, Camaros, & Mustangs, his dream car was a Subaru. Back then, that was different, nothing wrong with it, just different. He bought one & drove it over 400K. I lost touch with him for a few yrs., but now back acquainted & ride with him a couple of times a yr. on his BMW. Congrats to all who own them.

Should be a fun bike. I think some BMW's of that era had drivetrain issues. Hopefully, your bike isn't affected.

Yes...Dave "Redman" had to deal with this. He probably has the details...

I think I recall Dave's issue was spline failure? This one is in sweet shape, well-maintained, 15,000 miles on the clock. The chrome of the exhaust is blued (and yellowed), but the valves were just adjusted 50 miles ago, and it idles and runs very smoothly, so the F.I. system seems in order.

I've seen many of those with the blueing of the pipes...no concern there...congrats Mason! Good score. :)

I wouldn't mind seeing a few 'nudies' - do the bags come off easy?

Congratulations - many happy miles!

Very cool. We all need to have a beemer in our bike collection.

Just wondering, did the side to side shimmy freak you out a little the first time you started it?

Please forgive me for being a threadjacker. That was not my intention, I just started typing without think
The only right to do is delete my post---so that is what I just did.

Sorry again.

I'm sort of in the same place. Had an 83 R100RT and loved it.
The GS850G is getting a bit heavy and a nice R80 airhead seems to fit the bill.
The R80ST, if you could find one at a terrestrial price, comes in at just under 400 lbs dry.
R80R put me off when you start figuring the complexity of closed loop fuelling etc etc.
They made a lot of ugly plastic tanks in the 90s. They can be had for a song but just too many square feet of sail area for my liking and of course the weight.

It is a tall bike, but, coming from a Harley (even a Sportster), it feels light. I think it holds 5.5 US gallons of fuel and still hovers around 520 pounds wet.

Holy crap........sure makes working on a Suzuki seem like a walk in the park.
