    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Thoughts about the website in general

Am I wrong, or did Don’s username used to have “moderator” under it? Mandela Effect?
 
I like the idea of more sections for other bikes, not just classifieds. A GS doesn't fit my foreseeable lifestyle so I ride something else, but when I have a question about bikes, the folks on this forum are the ones I want to talk to. I would spend more time here if people were open to more threads on other bikes and the forum was setup for it. I feel like people are, but for example it just doesn't feel right posting a Triumph suspension question in the GS suspension section.

I feel like 'brand specific' might be too refined for a small forum, unless maybe it's a sub-category of 'other.' I'm not likely to click through threads on bikes I have no knowledge or interest in, but would click through anything technical in a general forum.

I always direct people from Facebook back to here... Facebook is an awful interface & only about 30% of what is written there really makes any sense (and most of that is coming from members here anyway...) :)
 
Having people exchanging PM's on working out deals for bike parts gives the hacker community that much more incentive to try cracking in. Names, addresses, billing info etc can be compiled and sold off before any actual damage has been done! Having people posting "Hey, check out what parts I have listed on eBay" and leaving all the particulars to be worked out there gives hackers less incentive to try getting in. Nuff said.
 
The scammers started on on Craigslist and then quickly moved to Facebook because FB doesn't really do anything to stop the scammers. All they care about is hits for helping their advertising revenue. It's one of the reasons I bagged them.
 
When I click on "POST REPLY," the "working..." balloon has recently been displaying frequently for 10 or more seconds. Sometimes I get impatient and just close the window.
I'm on a new Samsung Galaxy phone.
 
We are still having issues with the forum database. It looks like something is causing caching errors which then croaks the database process. You see it on your end as stalls when attempting to load a page. I am going to try and rebuild the search index to see if that helps matters some. Unfortunately I'll have have to shutdown the forum for a while as it takes quite a while to do this.
 
I have ideas to increase site traffic- does everyone have thong underwear and selfie mode on their phone?

I would like thegsresources web site to remain dedicated to the Suzuki GS. Maybe have an area for other models of bikes but not mixed with the GS's. I say this because I join forums based on the bike I own. Once I don't own that particular model bike I rarely ever visit that forum any more. I would think other folks do the same. I should mention I don't post very much, mostly read what everyone has to say. I appreciate this site and all the work that is done to maintain it, thanks. I also want to thank everyone that contributes and posts on this site, a good group of folks I'd say. Yes we are all getting older but i'm counting on younger generations digging the GS and getting involved. I've sold at least four GS bikes in the past to guys that were in their 20's. I've told them about thegsresources.com and can only hope they now use this site.
 
All seems pretty good. Doesn't always happen but other bikes "should" be in the other bike forum so the GS only folks don't got to see it unless they click on it, as I do regularly. I see more complaints about picture stuff than anything else, I know nothing about the pictures.. For me the Vortex is probably the most useless, out of place thing around here, but when in the mood I do click on and read some of that stuff, just for laughs.
 
Maybe I'm naive, or this is for some other reason a dumb thing to say, but what about migrating with other forums? There is oldskoolsuzuki.info and gstwins.com. Both of which, I can imagine, are struggling as well.

I understand this requires substantial organization, and the migration of data would be a bloody nightmare, but I can see upsides: increase of members and traffic, less overhead (more donations for a single infrastructure), and more information in one place.

Anyway, just a crazy idea...

There's the dickhead problem to take into account.

A brief look at both of those sites showed me that the first is run on ad revenue, the second is privately owned, I think.
We like not having ads, and as long as Frank is willing to keep this place running without resorting to that, with member donations, I think that's great.
A Triumph forum I frequent is ad-riddled. That's annoying. It has also just recently, through decisions by it's governing organization, has opened itself to participation with other motorcycle related forums in its realm. That has made that site an absolute mess, harder to find the info you're actually interested in, and invited, as Grimly so eloquently stated, a "dickhead problem" influx from those other related forums.

I was thinking since both of those websites are very close to the topic of GS's they wouldn't muddy the information too much. With increased members maybe the ads wouldn't be necessary.

Don't get me wrong, I'd prefer the website to stay as it is as well. But since Frank wrote somewhere he will pull the plug when this forum stops being self sustainable...just thinking out loud really.

Actually, I'll donate when salary arrives, probably the best thing to do.
