DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Just wondering if an 1100 engine/trans etc. would slide right into my 850 shafter. The main reason I'm thinking of this is the low gearing of the 850. Comfy cruising speed on the thing is just over 50. Wouldn't mind getting that up to about 65-70. Is the 1100 geared taller?

They are supposed to be geared different don't know for sure I have also heard that the 81?-82 1100 used a different rear diff 850s 3.08 82 1100 changed to 2.97?? gear ratio Like I said don't know this to be fact

The 1982 or 1983 GS1100G (or GK) shaftie engine/trans/middle gear package will fit perfectly in a 1982 or 1983 GS850G frame. No modifications are necessary.

The 1980 or 81 GS1000G engine package will fit a 1980 or 81 GS850G frame, with no mods. There are enough differences between the older 850/1000 models on one hand, and the 850/1100 models on the other.

Yes, the gearing is different in the 1100 as opposed to the 850. The 1100 is much more comfortable doing 75 to 80 mph all day long than is the 850. I owned four 850's before buying my GK.

The 1100 shaftie has all the virtues of the 850, plus the ability to cruise at high speeds at more sedate engine rpm's. I enjoyed my 850's, all four of them (two 82's, one 79, one 80), but nothing compares with my GS1100GK -- best bike I've ever owned in my 33 years of riding.
