Can someone tell me an easy way to remove the carbs/ air box, all jammed in pretty tight. I have an air box off of a GS 1000L , which is a different style "easier to remove" , will it work in the E model.

Whether it will fit will be determined by which "L" donated the box. :-k

There was a chain-driven 1000L and a shaft-driven 1000GL, but the side cover for the GL only showed "GS 1000L".

If your box is from a 1979 "L", it will probably fit. Any other year, it won't, because the carbs changed for the 1980 model year.

It was a chain drive L, so i guess i'm good to go . Thks for the quick reply. So the question of how to remove the old airbox is still a mistery, i've read that you must almost remove the engine to remove the carbs and airbox, is there some trick to removing these items ?

Seems like I've heard (on some models), you can unbolt the battery box so it can slide rearward giving a little more room. Not sure if this applies to your model.

On a chain drive gs1000, remove the rear section airbox with the filter in. That is above the battery. Loosen all clamps onto carbs and pull the front airbox/plenum part rearward off the carbs. Then remove throttle cable and choke cable / if fitted. Pull the carbs off inlet rubbers. The carbs squeeze out to right hand side, it is a tight fit !!. Then the airbox can be removed. Obviously if your rubber parts are hard things get difficult.

I remove the 2 bolts holding the air box to the frame, after removing the filter box.
Slide the air box back, then I pry the rubbers off the back of the carbs and lift the back of the carbs til they pop out of the inlets.
Slide the rack out to the right.
Pull the air box up and out, disconnecting the drain hose

Forgot about the 2 bolts on front airbox
Thinking boots are too stiff, seeing I've tried all your replies. This is why I wanted to know if the L air box would work, guess I'm cutting those boots off . Thks everyone for all the help.

Go back and re-read post #2. :-k

You will be good to go ONLY if the donor was a 1979 1000L.

I don't know for sure if there was a 1000L in 1980 or not. If there was, the airbox is different.

I use a screwdriver to pry back the air box boots, a bit at a time

It is often possible to push the airbox boots inside the airbox. Once everything's off soften the rubbers and put them back in place.

I'm just replacing the carbs on a 1000S. everything is nice and soft and well lubed - but it's still a pain...
Memory kicked in and i held the airbox back with a big rubber band between the breather pipe on the box and the tank mount on the frame. Over the top crossmember.
i haven't had to do a stock bike for some years.....

Heat from a hairdryer really helps when dealing with any of the rubbers new or old.... It's probably about time to replace them though :)

Good luck!
