Hello everyone,

So I recently bought a 1980 GS850G, and only got a couple of weeks of riding out of her then lost spark in 2 & 3. I replaced both coils and found that didn't solve my issue. So I've been doing more testing and have good ohms at the signal generator at 350. I tested the Ignitor by putting the 1 1/2 volt battery on on the blue and green leads and have spark on 1 & 4 but when I pull it away nothing. The bike will run on the two cylinders so I put my finger on the number 2 plug wire without the cap and there has a real small spark. So i have a Dyna S coming in the mail. I don't have the cash for a Dyna 2000 If thats even an option for my bike. So is my only option to find a used ignitor? Thanks! Thanks also for all the great info I've been finding here and on Basscliff very much appreciated!

Hi Mr. 850crazy,

Compared to the cost of a new igniter, the Dyna-S is a cost effective replacement. See the Electrical section of my website for more troubleshooting tips. Clean all of the electrical connections and grounds. Test thoroughly before you start throwing parts at your bike.

Let me dump a TON if information on you and share some GS850G lovin'. :D

I just stopped by to welcome you to the forum in my own, special way.

Crazy,

Welcome to GSR.

Have you checked the spark plug caps? Can check them with an ohm meter, or by swapping them with others. I think is most common ignition failure (well since not breaker points).
THe caps do fail over time and useage.
Are about $4 - 5 each.

Thanks!

Thanks!

Thanks for the awesome welcome! The rolled out red carpet was the icing. :D I have replaced all the spark plug caps also, with NGK ones. I have taken almost the whole wiring harness apart to find any bad connections and also to clean the connectors. I was looking at your Electrical section there on your site Basscliff. I was thinking it looked like the Dyna-S bypasses the ignitor and acts as both the ignitor and the signal generator. Am I right in thinking that? Because that would be awesome! Thanks again for all the help guys!

First thing I'd do is check voltage at the coils. Anything less than 11 volts and you might want to consider the coil relay mod.

Edit: and yes, the Dyna S replaced both the signal generators and the igniter.
