1983 Suzuki GS750E Restomod Build

Well guys the parts are rolling in so I figured I may as well start my build thread. You guys have taught me so much about the two GS's i've owned thus far and hope I can fix this one up in a way you guys will appreciate. My first bike was a chopped up 550E (not by me, merely what I had to work with) and while I liked it a lot I wanted something with a passenger seat for my wife and more power than the 550 could give me. I ended up trading it straight up for this '83 750E. Heard it run, needs the typical stuff most older bikes require to get it in good working order.


As I posted pics on the forum you all kindly helped me identify the multitude of issues this bike had. Incorrect forks with stock wheels meaning the calipers only clamped half of the rotor. Apparently the previous owner mounted 41mm katana forks but never finished the swap. Then my exhaust is complete garbage smashed all along the bottom with a 2010 gsxr can welded on so far over a right turn would probably kill me. So here begins the build.


I debated tracking down an entire stock front end thinking it'd be the cheapest solution to get it sitting correctly again. At the last second I found a set of katana wheels on ebay with almost new tires and figured 17" tires all the way around was the way to go so i bought them.


I also bought a katana rear axle (for the correct spacers and caliper mount) so i'd have matching wheels along with the upgraded 41mm forks.

Bodywork is going to be the slowest of all processes and other than previous owner drilling a hole in the tops of the side covers to make them stay it wasnt too bad. The rear cowl section had a chunk missing around the license plate area so I bought a replacement today for it.


Very dirty, but intact and had the side markers I couldn't seem to find on eBay. I'll eventually figure out patience to do bodywork and tackle that stuff last. Upon researching the '83 before I purchased it I came across a picture of a Yoshimura Edition 750E online. This picture is what sold me on this particular bike I like it quite a bit. It needed that vintage yoshimura exhaust. I convinced myself nothing else would look right. Ebay is amazing.




It's supposed to be off of a late '80s GSXR1100 so hopefully itll be pretty easy to fit. This is my favorite part of the bike so far. As it stands now, carbs need cleaned, oil needs changed, battery needs replacing, then various bodywork issues to be sorted out. I'll update this as items arrive. It will be a slow project but I hope to have it done in the next few months. In case anyone is curious here is the bike that sold me on this project.

 
Cool to see you moving forward on this. Are my eyes goofy or are the headpipes on the header out of wack?
Loks cool otherwise. Ive never heard of a Yoshi cyclone before.
 
Possibly. Honestly not sure. Worst case we have a plasma cutter and Tig welder...all will work out lol.
 
Good things to have at your disposal. Years ago I lowsided my 1150 at relatively low speeds, but the bike wedged itself under a guardrail and partially collapsed the pipe after the bend leaving the head. Eventually I gave it yo a local car builder and he cut out the bad piece, bent up a new one to match and welded it together. Its barely noticeable.
 
Got a little progress done today. Got the crap exhaust off. Has one broken stud that someone has appeared to use an EZ out on at one point in its life so will have to figure that out. Got the front wheel mounted. Was completely bolt on and super easy. The rear however wasn't. As it turns out I goofed up and didn't realize the cush drive hub with sprocket didn't come with the katana wheels. Then realized the stock one wouldn't work either so now I have to find one locally, post in the wanted section here, or go on eBay and find one before I can mount the rear. Anyway here is the one picture I took today. Bike sits evenly now. It's gonna look good when they're on.

 
Ground clearance may become an issue for the headers with the new forks and wheel. Pay attention to that.
 
I had that suspension set-up on my es for awhile. The pipe should be okay, plenty of clearance with that set-up. If my memory serves me i used the sprocket carrier for that wheel, i think later gs500 (same wheel) will work too. Those brakes are really good.

Not much to update. Get paid this week going to get a front fender, cush assembly, and hopefully clean the carbs. When the exhaust arrives I'll attempt to mount it and grab some pictures as well. Thinking my goal is to get everything working correctly and plan upgrades and paint as winter projects. I need to make a list of all of the upgrades I plan to do to keep track of them.

I'm curious to see what clearance he has with it, luckily those gsxf forks are almost as long as the stock forks were on those 3rd gen 750's.
 
Old pic of mine with that set-up, i had a s-rad era 750 shock mounted upside-down on it at the time. Took it off and put a Hagon on it soon after, but it sat at about the same height. Pipe is no centerstand style for those, on it since '84.

It'll be my luck it's off a 1st gen water cooled engine and I'll have all sorts of fabricating to make it work. Lol
 
Was at work today when I got a call from my wife. Large box arrived....my exhaust. Bugged her till she sent me some pictures of it. Decided after work to go to the salvage shop and look for some parts. I took some pictures of but a small section of my local yard. Pretty impressive place.





This is just the modern sportbike area. There is a few more rooms further back with older GS's, KZ's, CB's whatever 70's and 80's bikes you could ever want. Anyway found a few specific parts I needed. Notably a Katana fender.

The color is all wrong but its getting painted eventually anyway. Also got the hub to mount the rear wheel. No pictures of that yet i'll probably mount it up tomorrow. Now for the exhaust. It doesn't fit. I took a gamble the add said 80's to 90's gsxr assuming a oil cooled 1100. Don't think that's the case. The pipes fit the head perfectly but are too short to reach the collector where I want the muffler to sit and if i push them closer together then sit too low. I assumed the worst and will make it work. Heres it held together poorly with some zip ties.




That's about it for now. Will mount the rear wheel tomorrow and grab some more pictures.
 
Currently stuck figuring out the rear wheel. Caliper for whatever reason doesn't want to fit the mount and if I flip the mount around it hits the bolts holding on the rotor to the wheel. I'll post pictures up of this dilemma when I get home this afternoon. Thinking button head Allen bolts with fix the issue we shall see.
 
Sounds like you have to do some adjustment with the spacer and or caliper mount thicknesses, I had to do that with mine. I think i went with a thicker one between the wheel and the caliper mount and shaved some material off of the outer side of the caliper mount itself. Then again i think i might of had a caliper mount from a gsxr so, you might have to do something different....
 
Here is the only pic i have (good thing i kept it) as you can see it is a kat caliper, they are above the arm like stock. I cut the ends off of the stock gs brake stay arm and welded them to a piece of smaller dia. tube.
 
Ooops, now that i look at this pic again i think that it is one with a different wheel ('89 1100 gsxr) than the kat wheel that was on it before this one. But, the caliper and mount looked like this set-up. Hope this is still helpfull....
