1985 Yamaha FZ750 - rebuild

Hey quit loafing around. There is rust/dirt around that bracket holding the fuel pump. How's about cleaning that up and adding a dab of paint? "if a job's worth doing, it's worth doing right", my old man always yipped at me.......but I mostly didn't listen :(

Now with all that shiney new paint it really stands out.

It's looking good brother. Pretty soon she'll be rolling :)

Actually it's crap that won't come off, and it's not metal, so I can't paint it, it feels rubbery, could be a gasket type of thing, and I was not about to take it all apart, just to clean it off, so it will stay....Sorry.....

I will try to get it off again, but it was not coming off before...

Some more progress

Need to get at the carbs soon.....

and have to put in all the hoses and handlebar controls...

Yeah looking good , what needs done to your carbs ,cleaning or rebuild, Brian

I am gong to do a full tear down and rebuild, I might as well, as I don't know the state they are in, and when it was last done if ever. Hopefully I won't run into any issues, my only concern is breaking an O ring or dried out bowl gaskets, which are rubber as well.

I had the bike running with the carbs as they are, but I might as well do them, don't want to put everything back, and then have to take them out to do them right...

Well I touched up the area around the fuel pump, now it's all black, just for you Spyug....Painted the thermostat area as well, removed the front forks, have to make the bike lighter....

I am at the point where there is nothing else I can put back on the bike, at least while it's in the basement, I'll never get it out, I am sure it's heavy enough already, so at this point I have to stop...

There is not much left actually, the rims, the calipers, the exhaust, and of course the engine....however it's not ready, needs paint, and then it can go in....rims need paint and bearings and new rubber....

So it's time to work on the carbs, clean the brake calipers, do the rims, and wait for the warm weather so I can paint the engine....

ohhh I forgot, I will put the controls back on the bike before I take her outside....

and of course a few pictures...

cleaning carbs...

cleaning carbs...

Today was spent cleaning up the carbs....

I don't have new O rings, I don't have a ultrasonic cleaner, so it was carb cleaner out of the can, some MrClean didn't even have PineSol this time around, broke them down as far as I wanted to, dipped the the rest in the MrClean and hot water going to let them soak for a few hours, and I am going to hope for the best....

The best part, if it don't work, these are really easy to get at, out of the bike and a full strip and clean can be done latter....

For now they are as good as I can do, without going all the way....

Yes I know, I should go all the way, I just don't have the patience this time, and all the necessary parts....so let's see what happens....

And a few pictures of course...

Yes there is some crap in the bowls....

Shiny bowls, a few minutes with the wire wheel, and you get instant bling...Ohh the tops will get painted black....of course

Not bad just the way they are...

Some nice SS Alen Cap screw will go nice....

The rest of the carb bodies are taking a soak in the bucket......

I see a GEAR SHIFT SEAL like the one I need to replace on my CHAIN COVER.

Nice work btw. This model is more complex with parts than my "T". I also like the shape of the frame where the fuel tank is located. Reminds me of the contoured shape of my first Gixxer.

Rock on with the rebuild!

Thanks guys....

Actually not that complex, more or less the same as the GS, other than this one being water cooled, so a few extra rad hoses, water pump, ohh and it has an alternator.....

I have to continue, I want a different bike to ride this season....LOL

cleaning carbs 2....

cleaning carbs 2....

So I let the carb bodies soak for a few hours, and to my dismay, once I took them out of the solution, they went and turned darker on me...YUK....

I don't think it will have any affect on the function of the carb, they just look dark now, like they are old or something, I heard this can happen with vinegar, but didn't think MrClean would have this effect, next time I am going back to my PineSol dip.....

At least they are clean, all the crud is gone, and yes there could be crap in the jets and such, but it's a chance I will have to take at this time....

Tomorrow I will put them back together, if I get the SS screws and get the tops painted...

some pics of the dark side carbs....LOL

Carbs_Completed

Carbs_Completed

So after a good soak, some scrubbing, and painting, getting the SS Allen Cap Head screws, and some cursing along the way, the carbs are back together and ready to go back on the bike once the bike is ready....

I should have painted the bars, but too late now, maybe the next time the carbs are out, really there is no sense in any cosmetics on these carbs, because once all is back in place, you don't even see them....

So a few pictures....

Before the SS screws

After it's all buttoned up...

The carbs look good.

I tried cleaning a old marine carb last year with pine-sol. The carb came out nice and clean but the pine-sol would not loosen up whatever was stuck in that 50 yr old main jet. Needed acetone.:)

Good work.

Brake_cleaning

Brake_cleaning

so the last couple of nights, I have spent tearing apart the brake calipers and seeing what condition the braking system is in. To my relief, all is in good order, nothing was overly dirty, pitted, or messed up, pistons were all good, seals were in good enough shape to be reused, so after taking all 3 apart and inspecting, all were put back together reusing everything, and can now go in the pile of things to paint....

so as always a few pictures...
