If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

$8 air filters

First off I really don't want to hear all the reasons why this is wrong.

I wanted an alternative to the ugly stock air box and expensive aftermarket filters. I used 4 1.25" pvc caps, a foam air filter, and the mesh from an old air filter from my truck. I spent about $8 on the pvc and a new foam air filter.

They are not finished, I need to do some finish trimming and paint them.

How are you preventing the foam from being sucked into the engine?

I put another piece of mesh on the other side of the foam. Though that part may need a little more thought.

Why not use a PVC adaptor to a larger size and use bigger caps. That way, you are locking the foam in place and opening it up a little.

You think they will let enough air in to run the engine correctly?

I believe these filters are more of a restriction than the stock filter. We'll see how it runs. I have to tune the carburetors anyway.

I'm sure there are a bunch of variations that could be created. This is just my first iteration. If it doesn't work I'll try something else. You're suggestion surely would increase the size of the foam element which reduce it's resistance. Something to keep in mind.

I just realized one thing I need to change that will help captivate the foam elements: if I cut the screen slightly larger than the inside of the cap, the sharp edges will dig into the sides when it is pressed in, thus preventing its removal.

They won't work diddly - you'll lose power, it'll be a bugger to get to run right and it'll drink petrol for fun. You need to get something bellmouth shape on there (check out how airboxes / decent filters / bellmouths work).

You forgot that Mr. terror_ storm doesn't want to hear this!

Yeah I spotted that. Still needed to be said though as we all know the bloke's going to struggle forever getting it to run right.

Some folks are all about the struggle.

So maybe it won't run 100% perfect. So I spent $8. I used my brain a little. It sounds like you guys are trying to tell people not to think. I've done my research on non-factory air filters. I know that everyone says not to do it. Well I'm not just going to do something because a bunch of people on the internet say to use the stock box. I'm going to try something of my own thought. So please, let me fail and learn from my own mistakes.

/telling me not to do this & how terrible it will run

p.s. if you don't like my air filters then you'll probably hate this ;)

You are right about that. What did it do to you?

I think most people would have written it off as a parts bike when I got it. It's not like I wrecked a cherry example. This was apparently a drag bike for a while, it's had a hard life.

Good luck. I'm quite sure you will learn a lot.

I hope you don't get flaming backfires out the carbs ;)
