    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

So I made a mistake. Took my bike out after winter and rode it and blew a hole in piston #2. Stupid, I know, my first bike and I didn’t winterize it properly.

Tore the bike down and I’ve been saving up to get enough money to be able to fix it. I’m wondering what I should do next and was hoping to get some advice from the more experienced folks on this site, it was a great motor that burned a bit of oil but it only has about 11,000 miles on it when I bought it. It ran great before the winter and I put 4,000 miles on it in about 6 months before winter hit.

What I’m wanting to know is should I be looking for a new motor? Or just new parts and replace my pistons, piston rings, all gaskets and rehone cylinders? I’ve never really done a rebuild like this but I have my manuals and a mechanic friend or two.

What should I be looking at price-wise for getting replacement parts, I’ve looked on a few websites and tallied up most of what I need and it’s looking to be around 700$-800$, is that in the right ballpark or is there a cheaper way to get parts? Some websites have some parts and not others, is there a website that has everything? I’ve checked revzilla, partzilla, Dennis Kirk, Motorsport.com, Suzuki parthouse.

Also what years for gs850s have the same parts? Will pistons / rings for another year fit the same / have cross year compatibility?

Sorry for rambling but I’m new to this and just want to ride my baby again, thanks for listening and any help will be appreciated more than you know.
 
Unless you have tools and confidence in your friends and your mechanical abilities, it might be cheaper and easier to replace the engine. In fact, you might consider replacing the entire bike.

You might be able to recoup some $ by parting out the broken bike. Stripping parts is much easier than replacing pistons.

Also, I live well north of you (New York), have never winterized a bike in 50 years, and have never encountered any Spring problems. But I was born lucky. (Also rode through most winters.)
