A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

  • In order to help others find info on a particular bike, be sure to put the year, make or model of bike that you are asking a question about, in the Topic Title. This will allow people to pass by posts they have no interest in.

Another learning curve.

Thanks Steve, it truly is a priority for him. He owned a Honda Civic that came with the same warnings and borrowed time (or mileage).
I haven't checked yet but i hope one could do that, at least, with the engine in.

Yep, engine stays in the frame, the belt covers come right off. I don't remember details on the 1100, they might have a re-useable gasket (o-ring type thing), but check the parts fiche first.

I replaced the belts on my 1500 Wing at about 135,000 miles. They still looked new, but the tensioners (especially the right one) were starting to rumble a bit.

While the belts are off, be sure to inspect/replace the water pump. There is probably a good guide on goldwingdocs or on randakk. The greatest cause of water pump failure is lack of maintenance and use of the wrong fluid, so pay attention to what is recommended. They do NOT use the same coolant as the GSes. :-\\\

.

Steve, sometimes I use wet roads for engine cooling but it's not always favorable.

Just got on Randakk's website to search starter removal and man is it good. The possibility of losing the starter sprocket and chain (?) forcing engine removal is a myth.

Make sure you also have a good title. Lots of cool old bikes have become parts collections thanks to Indiana's draconian BMV (Bureau of Motorcycle Victimization), and from the tales I've heard, Ohio's rabble of bureaucrats is about the same or worse.

Post lots of pics!

My son- in- law tells me there's a title but I haven't seen it yet. I'm not sure he has it yet. He's still waiting on the keys:confused:
I don't know the guy he got it from but I'm hoping he didn't pick up a parts bike.
He can be impulsive at times.

Quick starter question

Quick starter question

20170614_084724.jpg If I test from this terminal to the case should i see continuity?

Yes, you will probably see continuity. That lead is for the power that will spin the starter. It goes from there, through one brush, through the windings on the armature, through another brush and on to the case, which is grounded to complete the circuit.

Not sure what resistance value you should see, but it should be a bit above zero.

Do not twist a single bolt or buy anything until you have the title in your name (son's name) and it's safely tucked into your desk drawer. I have literally seen it dozens and dozens of times people start wrenching and dropping cash only to figure out they don't have a title or can't get a title easily.

The GL1100 starter was a known weak spot.
There is a thread discussing how to rebuild them on Goldwing Docs forum

Here -->>
http://goldwingdocs.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=259

After I finished it --

I did see that video (wish I could stand in my garage with stocking feet) and tested the starter and she spun.
Tore it apart and blew out the carbon, looked at the bearing holes, checked the brushes and polished the armature.
All looks good and spins good. Reinstalled it and still nothing but sparks and a hum.
I'm using a battery charger for the tests and it acts like it's either shorting or the tyranny is locked up. It dims the lights in the garage.
I also saw a thread about the grounding tabs on the brush plate and this one shows signs of arcing, hence my question on continuity.
The tyranny and engine turn over pushing it in gear but the clutch is somewhat locked.
I still have it out and tonight I'll try to improve the brush plate ground, that may be one of its weaknesses, I saw directions on bolting a ground strap, but I'll buy a new one if it fails.
I don't have access to a load tester but that would narrow it down much.

PS: sorry to read about your stator troubles on the Brown County ride.

Sage advice, thanks.
No money sunk until title is in hand. But I can't resist the challenge of tinkering:)
If it doesn't show promise I'll waste no more time either.

View attachment 51534 With this teamwork we'll have it done in short order.

Ah...I remember my lil helpers back in the day.....I was doing snow removal all wrong - instead of throwing it off the driveway I was supposed to redeposit it elsewhere "on" the driveway and then play on it.....{dumb parents!}...snow, leaves, it's all the same I guess....

These are my 2nd generation lil helpers. And apparently all of the tools I was using were in the wrong order, they put them in the "correct" order for me.

Ah yes...anytime your working with tools, it appears so do they, just not the way they're supposed to...but it's still cute. Just don't try asking for said tool back because "they're not done yet!"
