anyone go for a ride today? Pics?

My KZ1300 Turbo was completely put together by MR. TURBO in Chicago. Thought everything needed was installed, plum down to water injection for a little extra piston cooling. It's been 40 yrs. but I don't remember any changes to the ign. system, pretty sure just the OEM stuff. No matter, that thing sticking out the side of that old Z1 sure is an eye catcher weather it accomplishes anything or not.

Been getting out 2-3-4 mornings a week, for little ride and stop at coffeeshop (or two).
And been getting out 2-3 evenings a week for little ride before sunset and then stop at beach/pier with the camera.

One afternoon I rode up this fairly steep duneside road down by the beach. Is about 3 blocks long up side of dune to the top.
At top can look back over the Lake Michigan, and can look over the other side, get view of town, and look down at part of the river channel thru town. ANd I got a photo of a lake freighter in the river channel. (Great Republic, 1981, 634ft)

TO ride back down, was in 2nd gear, engine braking all the way down.
At the bottom, I noticed didnt seem to be running well. On way home, didnt have the power, and was jitter shuddering.
Made it home.
Pipe 4 & 3 & 2 were hot hot. Number 1 pipe was barley warm.

Next day, this is plug 1.

Thick oily fouling. Clean it up, and back to its normal running.

now, I am not saying that downhill engine brake is the total cause of this, just that occassion probably added more to what had been accumulating.
Probably related to its oil burning, and puffing on decell, and blowing smoke when start if sits for a few days.
(I need to add oil about 175-200 miles. or sooner at highway speed.)

this is the engine I rebuilt in 2020&21 at 70some K.
I had shop check cyclinders which were in spec.
I replaced pistons with set from a fine GS member, and rings from Custom Cruise.
Had a used head rebuilt by another fine GSR member (lap valves, replace seals) who said had to take to shop to replace a valve guide that broke (I dont understand how/why).
Anyway, so is annoying that I went to that effort, and am yet dealing with oil burning. But I use the bike mostly for local rides.

Maybe I should check the other plugs.

Oh, local newspaper used my ship photo in the Weekly "Ships Log" artical.

No pics, but I sure enjoyed riding for a while this evening. My 850 has developed a bit of a flat spot between 7k-7500 rpms. Almost feels like it has a governor. I haven't ridden much this year, surely that can't be good for the carbs.

Getting caught up in the business of life, it's easy to forget just how freaking awesome it feels to ride.

Was Muskegon Bike Time over the weekend. Not really suited to me, but is only 20 miles away.

So I went up there only once,
mumble mumble ah once per bike

RT on Thursday evening, Gk on Friday evening, Shadow500 Saturday evening.

Six or more blocks of downtown and some side streets and some parking lots, full of bikes.
And then also the adjacent big HD dealer which is like a suburban shopping mall in itself, but I didnt go there.

Each time: rode thru, had to see someone leaving to find a place to park, walk around to find something to eat from a food vendor, watch the crazyness for a short while, then ride out and go for more of a ride.

Brutal ride today, I took the Bandit it out for it's second shakedown run and the vacation traffic here was just terrible. I usually leave the house about 6am and I'll be going back to that format. Bike is perfect but the Ricky road racer pipe has gotta go. Never thought I'd ever do it but I found a stock "garbage can size" Suzuki muffler and I'll be putting that on. I've had 2 other Bandits with aftermarket exhaust and they were fine but this two brothers thing is not my style. Cop bait for sure and just plain annoying. This scene is way prettier than it looks but my phone doesn't show it well at all. Biggest thing I wanted to test was the windshield height for buffeting but all I could do was 120KPH and it was good till then so I'll have to accept that I guess.

What road is that?

Seven, Twenty minute sessions... How many miles is that I wonder? Seems like quite a few.

Blackhawk Farms Raceway in Illinois is just under two miles, and Ridge Motorsports Park is just under 2.5.

In seven 20 minute sessions at BFR, I see about 75 miles on my trip odo at the end of the day. I suspect it's a bit more at Ridge, especially with no chicane and higher speeds on the front straight. Then again, it does have a lot of tight turns and is a lot more complex.

Hard to say which has a higher average speed, but Lapmeta.com (whoever they heck they are...) claims an average of 80mph at Ridge, and 87mph at BFR, so you'd likely do a little more distance in a session at BFR.

My beater track bike has no dash, figuring I get maybe 8 laps per session x 7 = 56 x 2.47= 138 miles.
I vaguely recall 6 years on the 83 Kat @ Ridge up until 2018, getting over 50+ laps.

Probably wouldn't even qualify for Moto America Junior Cup or BTR, ha ha!

I recently picked up this TL1000S that was in need of some TLC from too much sitting around in the p/o's garage... a fun little project, more fun now that it's on the road.

What kind of TLC, replace "spring on a stick", or?

Had a 01 TLS briefly & it was an interesting bike with some electronic flaws. Lots of cutting out @ low rpm's. Bought a Ivan's electronic something...can't remember it's purpose, but it helped smooth out electronic glitches & put 2 emission block off plates
on the engine.

The v-twin motor characteristics were awesome, having only ridden inline fours prior & gearing was super lazy @ freeway speeds, just loping along @ a much lower rpm than a inline four.

What year is it?

Kinda miss it, but a close friend still owns it so maybe...

Ha! The rotary damper remains in place, why take the fear of death out of the Widowmaker? It's part of its charm! :twistedevil:

Bike's a '97, first year model.

It had sat for a few years in a not-quite-dry-but-not-really-damp garage, the previous owner was in his 70's and couldn't comfortably ride it far anymore. I'm in my 50's and can't comfortably ride it far, but I digress.... The tires were from 2008, the brake fluid hadn't been flushed in the 12 years he'd owned it, nor had the coolant. Surprisingly, he had changed the oil and filter and put in a new battery this spring just because he loved the bike, but didn't get to put any miles on it. Both front indicators were snapped off from aggressive wash-brushing, and the paint was basically cloudy also from said wash-brush. Etc, etc.

I replaced parts that needing replacing, greased things that should be greasy but weren't, flushed fluids, freed up two seized pistons in the front-left caliper, cleaned and inspected things as I went through it... and gave the bodywork a hand-compounding and wax job. Oh, and had new tires installed. There are still a few things on my to-do list but the bike is road-worthy again and I can't seem to stay off of it. I do love that engine having had two TL-Rs in the past, but as you found, the fueling is pretty iffy being very early Suzuki F.I. It's easy enough to ride around the snatch (giggity) but I might try a period Yosh-box on it to try to add some finesse. Maybe. I'd really hate to mess it up...

In the meantime, I ride.
