Re: anyone jetted a gs 450 for pods and a 2 into 1 header

I'm putting, a mac 2into1 on my 450 this winter. I've checked into pod filters and most of the feed back I received was don't do it. It'll be too hard to set up. Not being a mechanic, it probably is too hard for me, but if you work it out, I'd love to hear about it!

PS: Do you think you might squeeze a nitro bottle in there somewhere?

yes i did hit the nail on the head i went 4 sizes up on the main jet which mine had 51's in each carb i put so i have 55 mains and i stepped 2.5 on the pilot i forgot what it was and i moved the needle up a notch and man what a difference it starts right up has awesome power but now i got a air leak coming from the slide rubbers in the top of off one of my carbs anyone know where to get these without having to take out a loan buy chance

Nice! Glad you figured it out. Did you have the Mac 2-1? If so that setup is pretty close to stock and this info should be VERY handy for folks wanting pods on their 450 (like me :))

well, all i can say is that this engine of mine has been a challenge cause it,s in a three wheeler, but i,ll give some advice on jetting and stuff so here goes. First off my elevation is 400 ft above sea level, and i ride this bike at sea level, so this is what i had to do to get it to run GOOD!!. first off get good needle and seats for offroad use. next i cleaned and soaked the carbs for 24 hours in chemdip. then i cleaned out ALL orfices with carb claner (88 cent walmart kind) lol, and shot compressed air through every hole in the thing. next i removed the covers over the mixture screws by drilling a small hole in the covers and screwing a selftapping screw in and yanking on it till the little machined covers came out. then came the tuning part. Too make a long story short i had to go to a no.20 pilot jet and a 55 main jet stock they have a 17.5 pilot and a 51 main and i fiddeled with the mixture screws a while too and that is what it took for pods and a mac 2 into 1 header (with a modifyed muffler to fit a three wheeler) :D and that,s it for me. if your higher elevation and need to jet, i would only jump maybe 1 to 1 1/2 on the pilot and 2 sizes on the main or moving the needle may help too which i tried and it got to rich so i put it back to the stock location. now i got a air leak coming from one of the diaphrams so off they will come again to fix that boy i sure am glad they are easy acsess

Cool info. Yeah, prolly the best part about pods is the ease of future carb removal.

I have a not-so-stock exhaust (basically 2 automotive glasspacs welded to the stock headers - don't ask it wasn't me...). the dude put bigger jets in it, but not quite sure how much bigger.

I will be doing the dip deal on my carbs soon. I just got a float that just ain't set right. At the same time I'd like to put pods in (funds providing).

Did you put K&N's or other brand on yours?

I can call tomorrow to a local parts yard and see what they'd charge for a diaphram and let you know. They sold me a float out of one, so I'd guess they'd sell me a diaphram. If you still need one...

Heya J.

I got a response from the cycle yard I usually get my stuff from. 45$ each on the diaphrams, ss long as we are talking the early 80's carbs. I asked for a price based on my (1980 450E) carbs. You can check BikeBandit or similar for part numbers.

Lemme know if this interests you. I do believe they'll ship parts as well. Though I suppose its possible you can find similar deals nearer you. Just let me know, I'd be happy to help.

hey man thanks for hunting down those parts for me but i just bought a set of carbs for 25 bones. but if the diaphrams turn out to be no good i,ll be getting in touch with ya. oh and if your exaust is not stock and no one touched the pilots on that bike of yours it will not run on a cylinder and is VERY easy to misjudge as a float prob on those bikes (very sensitive to exaust and air box mods) i know cause i did it. your pilot is in the bowl of the carbs along with the main and the pilot air screw in the back where, the air box goes on is adjustible also. so when jetting aim a little fat when ya put pilots in it cause you can compensate for a little rich buy turing the pilot air screw a little., just in case your flaot is,nt messed up try that. little trick

heh I know it's the float. I had replaced it with a used one, when the one I had developed a crack, without setting it. But I'll be tearing them down completely sometime before spring hits and doing the fullout dip treatment.

You can send me a PM here or send me an email at bgmart@gmail.com about the diaphrams if you want.

Does your 450 have a 51 main jet? These are the BS34SS carbs right?
I remember the last time I had a set of 450 carbs (off an '88 ) open the main jet was over a 100, a 120 or close to that size. Or am I totally wrong? :?

stock jets are:
Needle, jet 4C2 (on diaphram)
Pilot jet 17.5
Needle jet Y-6 (in the float bowl)
Main jet 115

This is according to the Suzuki parts microfische 1980 450E&S for BS34SS carbs

Mine have been altered, or so the PO said, so I am unsure what exactly I have right now.
