A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Bike tear down

ukjules

Forum Sage
Do you reckon a weekend is enough to tear down a motorbike
(like my ones RD AND GSX) to have the frame ready
for sandblasting ? never really tore down a bike to
a frame before.

This is my winter project on two of em.

Is it a case of

tank , seat , engine out ,front end , the rest ?
any tips pitfalls ?

(assume got all tools and a small lift that goes under frame)

A weekend could be enough depending on how fast you move, how many pictures you take and how well you document what goes where and how. Your electrical will be your biggest documentation headache so take your time with it.

There is a way to take the engine out by laying the bike down on its side. Search through the archives to find pictures of how to do it; I believe GSRick has a video that a former member took of doing so as well.

How long is your "weekend"? :-k

If you start right after you get home from work on Friday, stop about midnight, continue on Saturday from about 8:00 again to midnight, you <might> have most items off the frame. At any rate, you will be ready to start cleaning the frame on Sunday.

Also, as cowboy hinted, it depends a LOT on how much you document the process. At the very least, the fasteners for each assembly should be put in plastic bags and labeled. Pictures are also handy, but be sure to document them, as well. Include notes the explain why the picture was taken, be sure to have some unique identifier in the picture, as you will end up having several pictures that apparently show the same thing, unless you mention what changed from the last one.

.

weekend it is then for plan.

elecs will be the issue. my area of ignorance and fear
as red green colour blind...... so I have had to by
one of those labelling machines and make up my own colours....
in the past.

p.s as for getting engine out I can get a 750
kwak , gs550 out myself easily ..... never had a problem there.
more than a 750 I agree be impossible alone.

Should be straightforward as have already been over
it (gsx250) sorting out mechanically and all stripped threads.

will add a thread so all can enjoy through the winter
as its frame out and paint in some way ! still
to be decided but def shotblasted .
